NFL to college: An opposing view

This may be unpopular but I think there is a better case for these guys than what the media is portraying.
Players had to declare for the NFL draft by 01/14/26
NFL draft was held on 04/23/26
NCAA announced and approved the 5 for 5 rule on 06/23/26
Take a hypothetical player who played all four years at Southeaster who didn't even bother to declare for the draft, it seems everyone is ok with them unexpectedly getting a 5th year and taking advantage of it.
Now take a hypothetical player who played all four years at Tulane who did declare for the draft but got no invite, it seems everyone is ok with them unexpectedly getting a 5th year and taking advantage of it.
Now take a hypothetical player who played all four years at Ole Miss who also declared for the draft and was not good enough to get drafted but got an UDFA invite. This is the OBVIOUS line that shouldn't be crossed that they are able to return for an unexpected 5th year?
Had the NCAA announced the rule much earlier, it would be clear that a player deliberately gave up any remaining eligibility by participating in the draft. Now players that aren't good enough to get a call from the NFL have the option of returning, the players good enough to make an NFL roster have no reason to return, and the ones stuck in the middle should lose out on the option in the court of public opinion.

It is all about the rule coming into effect when it did.
A lot of these guys would’ve never declared for the draft if they knew another year of eligibility was on the table.
But that isn’t fun to “debate” on the 30 ESPN shows that will bash us for moving on this and doing so WITHIN THE RULES.

i understand all of this...
here is the thing
that class should have never been granted the extra year by the judge
that class finished eligibility under the rules at the time, period. classes before them getting the extra covid year and now the classes behind them getting 5 for 5 doesnt change anything for their class.
sorry its bullshite, hopefully LSU admin stops this shite

Exactly.
Do I think college football has lost its spirit and sucks now? Yes, absolutely. Is this some sort of final straw? Absolutely not.
There are many better examples as to why college athletics is dead.

The best thing to have done would have been to make that ruling after it would have been too late to enroll in school.

yep, but they were trying to give coaches time to prepare, they waited the 2025-2026 fall spring sports were over but still not enough
really hoping some Ole Miss alum GM claims him on waivers

You are probably right about the judge's ruling, but maybe the NCAA should not have been dangling the 5th-year option out there (rumors abounded for almost a year before it was announced) and should have either included the 2022 HS class or delayed the announcement until after the start of the football season. Given the current litigious climate in college athletics, it felt like this outcome was inevitable.

But it's a point of contention that plays into the lawsuits.

Nothing to be sorry for, it's an understandable, probably correct, sentiment.

It's a 1-year problem; it looks like it will benefit LSU right now, and they seem to be on board with it, so I doubt they will, and I'm not sure they should, given that other universities have the same opportunities.
Can't wait for the season to start and this issue to be behind us all.

thats because it takes a while for the ncaa to implement something like this
they waited until all the springs sports and sports for the academic year were complete before even voting on this

its still fricking stupid. they signed under a set of rules, ncaa honored those rules for them, then changed the rules

i get it...i still do not understand why LSU feels like they have to push the rules so fricking hard right now, its a terrible look. sorry but it is, not as bad as the pictures that keep coming out of the so called welcome parties on campus but not a good look at all

me too but man, I hate things that make me not like what my own school is doing

And next year, it will be something else that allows players to keep playing for years on end.
Five years is arbitrary. Why not six, ABC player was hurt or sad that one season and didn’t play anyway? There is a judge somewhere who will make that ruling within 12 months.
Posted on 8/24/26 at 9:05 am to eelsuee
This is a 100 percent correct view. This is all on the ncaa because they can’t get things done in a smart timely manner. They have caused all their own headaches by being stupid.

It's all arbitrary; all rules and laws are.

Doubtful, though not impossible if they get a completely unscrupulous judge, and a court of appeals would likely throw that out on its face.

There were discussions more than a year before that, and it was crystal clear it was going to pass. They could not have reasonably thought that they could do this when they did and not see lawsuits, given how successful those had been before now. They could have avoided it by simply allowing the HS class of 2022. That is all I am saying.
It is the unfortunate world we live in now, and until there is some federal law that prohibits these sorts of lawsuits, or the NCAA (or whatever future governing body in NCAA sports) finds some way to avoid them (like a binding arbitration clause the athletes have to sign), it will be the case. To quote a line from Cool Hand Luke.
So ready for the season to start.

If it’s not that, it will be something else. The lawsuits and the courts are not going to stop undermining eligibility rules until Congress either exempts the NCAA from anti-trust and other related items, or the players get a union.
We’re nowhere near the bottom of the slope and it’s very slippery.

I dont see how you can punish any of them based on the timeline. Just my opinion. Any singling out of a certain scenario is not fair. Either all are eligible. Or none

i fricking hate it and yea the discussions are required before voting to vet everything

Agree. A lot of this is timing.

They aren't being punished. A rule was changed after some of them had exhausted their eligibility, and they were explicitly excluded from the rule.
I could give the NCAA some credit of benefit of the doubt that foreseeing legal challenges, the elected to make 2022 the cutoff. If they had included the class of 2022 in the extended eligibility, you'd be seeing people from the class of 2021 suing for an additional year.

Maybe an unpopular take, all of them should be ineligible.

Too bad. Rantards only see "Ex-NFL" and start menstruating because they have no ability to understand the nuance of the situation.
Who are the ones "stuck in the middle"? I feel like anyone who were mislead into believing that they HAD to enter the draft should be able to return to college for a 5th season. They deserve the benefit of the doubt if they would have wanted to stay for the 5th season but felt that it wasn't an option when they declared.

Well imo they were punished by the ncaa waiting until after the draft to make this call. They could have done that in jan
