If they can play, we should go get the best ones. If in some magical world other teams were not going after them, then maybe I'd agree. We ain't in that magical world.

Maybe an unpopular take, all of them should be ineligible.
As long as this ruling applies this year only, I think it is a very reasonable decision by the courts.

When the narrative is limited to "LSU is signing NFL players", it sounds absurd. Oh well, embrace the villain role.

That’s not really an opposing view. It’s basically the explanation Lane gave in his presser.
I’d like to add some context and food for thought. Th OP mentioned the NFL draft and it’s a big component of this and its relation to the timing of the 5-for-5 ruling. These players were under the impression they had run out of eligibility so their only option was to go pro. It is inferred that the NCAA knew the 5-for-5 ruling was coming down and held off as long as they could so that this last crop of seniors would go pro, automatically losing their eligibility. And here’s the contextual part. Let’s remember that, prior to this ruling, many other collegiate sports athletes can test the waters of their respective pro draft and decide to come back if they don’t like where they were drafted, the money being offered, or almost any other reason, so long as they don’t sign or actually participate with a pro team in some capacity. College football players never had this luxury. Once they chose to go pro, that was it. They were no longer eligible. When the 5-for-5 ruling came out, most of these guys had already declared for the NFL, assuming their college career was already over. Some, maybe many, of these guys would’ve came back for a 5th year had they been told they could from the beginning. (Let’s face it, some of these guys know they don’t have much of a playing career after college.) Then the injunctions/TROs started dropping. Now, the ones that would have stayed in college just to prolong their football careers, rightfully want to come back. They feel cheated. I can’t blame them. The NCAA handled this poorly from the beginning.
