Actually, this year it should be kids who didn’t make the 53 man roster. Going forward it can be REALLY clear. If you don’t pull your name out of consideration for the NFL draft by the deadline each year, you are no longer eligible to play in college. That is super clean and easy. The issue is they made the 5/5 rule after that deadline this year. Going forward they can make it really easy.

Exactly. Because they've now technically opened the door for minicamp players to return with a TRO because they don't consider them pros.

The NCAA needs to get with all the pro sports leagues and hammer out an agreement. Then once they have that it will be simple. To enter your name into the draft you have to sign a contract/waiver. This will state in short form that you are voluntarily giving up your right to return to college in the sport you are currently playing forever ( ie a football player cant return to football). That still allows for pro track stars to go to football, or pro baseball guys to return to football in college. Players will be required to sign this waiver to be eligible to be drafted and/or signed as a UDFA. It must be adopted by the players unions as well so there is no confusion. Problem solved. Now if someone wants to leave their sport and attempt to go "pro" in that sport they must voluntarily waive all their rights to return to the "amateur" or college level of said sport. NO more grey area, No more issues, no more court involvevment because you have waiver signed voluntarily surrending any further eligibility.

Why didn't they just use this standard? Easy to understand, easy to prove, easy to enforce. Fair and even.
That would create a ton of chaos. If that were simply the rule, theoretically every junior or senior could go try out for NFL rosters. Then two weeks before the season starts you have however many players that didn’t make the final 53 man roster trying to come back to college. That’s chaos.
I legitimately can’t figure out why there are so many people like the OP that want players that are trying to make NFL rosters and playing in preseason games to be able to come back to college.

It's a joke! These kids are paid athletes. And in some cases may actually make more money in college than they would in the Pros. Everyone needs to stop acting like they are college kids getting by on ramen noodles.

What then about the Class of 2021 kids that left early declared for the NFL draft and have bounced around training camps for the last 2 years......should they be eligible too? So is the new standard, even if you sign as a UDFA, if you've never made a regular season roster and have not participated in pre season games, it's all good, you can come back to college major in Underwater Basket Weaving for a semester, get paid for it and play a little ball as well?

Because that wouldn't fix their objective. Harris would qualify since he's never even practiced for an NFL team. You see, this isn't about any of that, they're trying to set a line in the sand...ANY line in the sand. They're grasping for a last hope, realizing their power is almost gone.
All they had to do was give everyone in the 2022 signing class an opportunity to come back when all this started BEFORE the NFL draft. But they kept drawing an arbitrary line they knew would keep getting erased by courts.

Before it was declaring for the draft. Now it’s minicamps bc they want to let Texas skirt by.
I don’t think that’s accurate.
From what i have seen, the NCAA’s bylaws stated,
“After initial full-time collegiate enrollment, an individual who has eligibility remaining may try out with a professional athletics team … at any time, provided the individual does not miss class.”
It became effective in August of 2007. Players like the UT guy could return if only trying out during a minicamp and no professional contract to participate in a nfl training camp was signed.

they didn't word it like this for one reason - they want to prosecute LSU and no one else.
They wanted the support of Texas, Missouri, Ole Miss, Alabama, etc., all of whom I believe at least recruited, if not signed players who declared for the NFL and participated in Rookie/Training Camps.

So is this the established line that won't be crossed going forward? Just this batch from 20222 or are we setting things up for more challenges to eligibility going forward?
Is the NCAA and by extension the conferences going to have to get an Antitrust exemption that would allow for some order to be established?
