Two guys not talked about but were said to be the most athletic on their respective roster.
-Pat Rogers OLB
-James Gillyard DE
Both were seniors in 1995, a defense that allowed just 15.5ppg. Gillyard was part of a front 4 that accumulated the most tackles for loss and sacks in LSU history along with Booger, Chuck Wiley and Gabe Northern, finishing with 18 career sacks himself (10th alltime). Rogers was grouped with Allen Stansberry and Robert Deshotel at LB.

You’re right about his combine speed but remember Faulk gained like 25lbs during his final season at LSU and speed isn’t the only athletic standard. I think James was a better athlete but Faulk was a very fluid and mobile ILB also.

Add in Jamarcus Russell, he was as much a freak athlete as anyone else

Good call, I remember the second half of his final season he became a real weapon on those QB draws.

Billy Cannon (SEC shotput and 100 yard dash champ)
Patrick Peterson (so big, so fast ... and a corner?)
Alan Faneca (I know OL may not seem to fit here but he was so agile for being so big and physical)
Leonard Fournette (see Auburn!)
Chad Jones (perhaps a little sentimental here but great size, very good if not great speed, and a fastball well into the 90s).

Hunter was a true freak. What about Booger? 294lbs, played both DT spots and nose guard finishing with 8.5 sacks at the nose his Sr. Season which is extremely high for that position. Also played some goaline fullback and caught a TD pass vs Florida in 1995.

The 1995 front seven is often overlooked in the discussion of great LSU defenses but it was solid.
Another "freak" from the mid- to late 90's era that I haven't seen mentioned was Jarvis Green.

3. Danielle Hunter
4. Laron Landry
5. Odell
I really like this top 5. I think it gets pretty hard after that.

Yes, Green was an outstanding college pass rusher who had little around him to take double teams away and who’s numbers suffered because of a scheme change his last couple seasons. Holds the LSU freshman sack record, 8 in 10 starts (1998) and had 15 during his first 2 seasons in BR. In the NFL became a 3-4 end for the Patriots and played a long time showing his diverse athletic skill. I think he played here in the 260-268 range then got up to 285-290 at the next level, still maintaining athleticism. He had 14 sacks between 06 and 07 for New England. Very underrated player for LSU.

The list begins with Billy Cannon and Tommy Casanova.

That’s fair but he still ran 4.84, and that alone removes you from this list

We led the SEC in points allowed, 9th nationally, (15.5) and were second in yards allowed (308.9).
Hard to imagine an LSU defense that good being overlooked but it mostly is. It was back in 95 which doesn’t seem that long ago to geezers like us but I can see why the younger guys aren’t as familiar with it.

Arnold Miller was extremely athletic as well. Dude blocked FG’s by lining up behind the DL and leaping straight up.

Ok. Does that have anything to do with the players saying what they said to the media during the leadup to that game? It was even mentioned in the game broadcast. Was he on the team?

Not even the best athlete at his position. That would've been Armand Williams. He didn't play either but he was on the team and a better all around athlete than Beckham.

I think you’re probably right but without knowing his speed prior to the weight gain it may not be an exact judgment of how athletic he was at LSU. I’ve always thought it was a mistake, him going from 230ish to 254lbs for the draft. If that was his plan for his pro career he should’ve made the move to the strong side because he surely didn’t move the same way after he blew up.
