We shouldn’t. The last two years are perfect evidence of that.
Last year we pretty much hit on every pickup. All of the big ones (Eyanson, Dickinson, Stanny, Hernandez, Cowen) ended up being major contributors on a title team.
This year, only Moore really hit (but not nearly at the level Eyanson did). Lach has shown some flashes, but has been inconsistent. Dardar, Caraway, and Garcia are playable, but have been just ok to below average. Yorke and Simpson ended up being total busts. This is about the worst you can expect.
So best you can image and worst in back to back years. Based on Jay’s very good past record with the portal before 25, we should see this even out with some impactful players, a few solid rotation guys and one or two who don’t work out.
He’s already said his approach will change toward versatility and proven defense rather than power, so hopefully that gets us to a more even and consistent portal output in the future.

Yes.
The problem with them is that they're actually a decent team but their conference is so bad that you run the risk of losing to them and they're going to drag down your RPI whether you win or not.

This is the result of losing so many players, 3 of 4 infielders, and your Friday and Saturday starters, a couple of top bullpen guys, plus at least 1 position player you were expecting to at least DH this year (Larson), and probably a couple of other position players that would have been good pieces, maybe starters, this year.
I think Jay learned something from this and won't have the same portal issues again, but navigating baseball from year to year is constantly changing now so I won't say never about much.
