I don't think Miles is a bad coach, I just think LSU fans have unrealistic expectations year in and year out. Miles =/= Saban. You can't expect LSU to compete for titles every year. Especially not in the SEC.

So if your coach is not Continuosly in the top 2 or 3 you fire him? And replace him with who? Ask Nebraska how that works out.
By the way you forgot to mention them in your list as well as USC .

Lastly, Fisher isn't remotely close to being an elite coach. He's had the most talent of the ACC teams since he's been the headcoach and is 31-10 through his first 3 full years, again 10-3 team, not elite.
Fisher completely turned around a program heading for the garbage bin, has the highest win % in ACC history (over Bobby), consistently brings in top recruiting classes, has won a BCS game, and has his team ready to compete for a title this year.
Fisher not an elite coach? Yeah, that's a joke.
eta: And he's only had five first rounders in three years.

For a while now, I've been comparing Miles years to the Charley McClendon years. Believe me, I've been around for all of Cholly Mac's years. 2 or 3 loss seasons and going to an average bowl. Back then, I think fans were happy or satisfied with that.
I'm not trying to be a negatiger. It just seems like with the tough SEC competition every year that we are just a shade below a top-tier caliber team.

100% agreed
BAMA little brother syndrome.

For long term, Miles is LSUs best option. Coaches don't stay in one spot anymore very often..so we can either deal with a ton of 10 win seasons and a national championship or two more, or we can go on a coaching hunt every 4-5 years.

He's in a group in between. He doesn't harm the program, he recruits well, and his decisions have won us more games than they've lost. But he does sometimes lose us games with his decision making. And you can't say Muschamp because this is just his third year as a HC. It's still to early to tell exactly what's going to happen with him.

4 out of 5 years bowl losses, season ending games, or lost NC. That should answer the question for you about Miles. His teams can't finish, and that is a hallmark of bad coaching.
Miles is a manager, nothing more nothing less. You will get your ten wins but his teams won't finish when the chips are Down.
Poor motivation, attention to detail and lack of preparation define his coaching style. He coaches from the gut and from the heart, the Bo way, that's where he learned it. He believes that want and desire will overcome skill and knowledge of the game.

Miles has exceeded my expectations. When he was first hired, I thought we were headed for imminent collapse. Obviously that has not happened. To the contrary, he took a rising "new money" program and cemented it in the college football elite.
Could we do better? Yes. Although there probably aren't many that could do better, and there is certainly a huge risk in any change (really, we have nowhere to go but down)
All that said, miles discussion is really moot until we have back-to-back 8-4 type seasons or worse. His seat got very hot after the 2009 season, but since then the program got it's swagger back.
I like Miles. Do I wish we still had Saban, sure. But I like where our program is. If Miles were to retire this year, I think he should be proud of the program and the accomplishments that he would leave behind. LSU and Miles have turned a blossoming program built by Saban into a perennial national force.
FWIW, after Miles I would like LSU to go after Shaw, Fisher, Mora.

See, that is wrong. I DO expect to COMPETE for titles. I can except not winning it all every year, that would be unrealistic, but with all the elements that LSU has, we SHOULD compete every year. Nothing wrong with 11-1, 10-2. As long as Bama is in the West, LSU will always have a big road block to perfection.

Miles is no Saban or Meyer, and probably not a Kelly. I'll give you that.
Really? How did Les do v Urban Cryer?

Just out of curiosity, what is Miles record against these coaches?
Meyer, 2-3
Saban' 3-4
Kelly - 1-0
So, yes his record is below .500. Also, two of those wins came against Meyer and Saban i their first years, when they had inherited teams on the decline and Mikes was playing with Saban's players.
After both got their programs going he is 3-7 against them.

So, are you happy with being good, but falling short year after year
"good" is in the eye of the beholder.
I'm thinking Top 3 ranking in the nation in wins while playing in the best college conference in the world equates to a tad better than "good, but each to our own.
I'm also thinking that playing for the BCSC 25% of time since 05 would hardly equate to "falling short year after year" in the minds of any sane/rational college fan.
When the very best period of college football in LSU history and one the very best periods in college football since 05 is seen as ho-hum "good", well...I can only smile and

Are you saying Miles is a top four or five coach in the country?

Is that really all you took from my post? FWIW, Urban Meyer is a better football coach than CLM. That's not really debatable.

OP, Miami is not down this year. The loss of scholarships will hurt them in the near future, but they are good this year.

Yours is a legitimate perspective, and it's gained credence with this season's performance. Up until this season, I'd have said that the objective view around the country is that Miles and Kelly are in a class by themselves after Saban and maybe Meyer. You're giving Kelly a lot of credit considering he had that Nike machine behind him and still won no championships. Likewise Fisher looked like garbage before this year.
If Miles doesn't return to national championship contention in the next two years, I'd say replace him. In the mean time, no contract extensions.
He had a great recruiting year last year, is poised for a great one this year, and he has an elite coaching staff. I give him a good chance at rebounding from a down year after a three year run of being the second best program in the nation.
