Miles and Saban time line

Just read an article where Miles discusses his opportunity to become Michigans Head Coach. This is the second go round where ESPN reported it was a done deal- think it was 2007. He repeated his love of Michigan and also that the job was ultimately never offered but he was fortunate enough to be at a “decent “ place. Just wondering if he had been offered and probably taken the Michigan job, would Saban have been free to come back to LSU ? He arrived at Alabama in January of 2007 .

Who knows if he would've bailed on Alabama but he apparently tried to come back in 2006 and LSU decided to keep Les. I'd imagine, though, that LSU would've been veeeeeerrrrrrrry appealing to Nick even if he was at Alabama for that first year. Nick really did/does love LSU.

I take it then that Saban had already accepted the Alabama job when the second Miles to Michigan opportunity surfaced ? If so, I don’t think he would’ve pulled. Kiffin thing.

I don't think Saban would have bailed on Alabama after just one rebuilding season to return to LSU for what, in large degree, was a rebuilding season in 2008. Saban had the pieces in place for his 2008 signing class at LSU. He wasn't going to leave and throw all of that into chaos to try to hurriedly put together a staff/class at LSU.
Hindsight is 20/20. But Les's first 3 seasons at LSU were really good:
Regular season:
2005: 10-1
2006: 10-2
2007: 10-2
Even compared to Saban's 5 seasons that was a very good record.

If Les did indeed say that LSU was a "decent" place, then his head wasn't screwed on straight, because LSU was a MUCH better program at that time.

Too many unknowns. But man '07 is still the craziest College Football season to date. That is one of the best Seasons of College Football regardless of your team.

Sure he won a lot of games his 1st 3 seasons but he had the talent to win at least one more championship Mabel 2.He squandered more offensive talent in his first 2 seasons as BK did his last.Nick doesn’t lose 4 games with that talent.

I don't disagree but its not apples to apples. IF Les Miles leaves that doesn't mean we win the Championship in 2007. That also doesn't mean that Nick Saban comes back to LSU when he was already at Bama recruiting and developing his team. It also doesn't mean that he doesn't come to LSU but there are too many unknowns. It isn't as simple as saying we lose Miles we get Saban. It just never works that way.

Nick wanted to return to LSU and many wanted him back, but justifying moving on from Les after winning a Natty was not something anyone wanted to tackle.

I’ve always wondered what would’ve happen if Jack Del Rio actually would’ve hung up on his agent and gotten out his car to meet the LSU admin before they hired miles.

Saban was very smart about his coaching career. He went to LSU because of the tremendous amount of pro players from Louisiana.. He always said it's all about the players.
Louisiana has a stockpile of talent. Im not sure why. You'd think Florida and Georgia would have more.
Bama had history and ability to reach into all the southern states. They had leverage with Miami Dolphins.
The rabbit hole is deep with Bama and Miami Dolphins.
The REC couldn't allow LSU to have the best coach in the college ranks. They (LSU) already had the best players ihomegrown n the south.

Since you brought that up, I was with Richard Gill when Nick called about the possible opening at LSU. Bama finished 6-6 that year in Saban’s first year. All this was happening during the SEC championship week when we played Tennessee.

I wouldn’t trade the 2007 season for anything LSU has ever had. Those games were so extremely fun, those players had heart that can’t be quantified and I understand 2019 was the greatest team in CFB history. I’m not arguing that. But that 2007 season was something else entirely.
I walked out of that VT game saying “if we play like that nobody in the country can beat us” and I still think that. I’ll never forgive Auburn for what they did to Dorsey. That catch by Byrd in the student section was one of the greatest sports moments of my life. That final drive vs Florida where Hester etched his name in the lore of Tiger Stadium? Come the frick on man.
We can play what if all day long but I wouldn’t trade that 2007 season for anything.

The real what if is what if Rich Rodrguez had not backed out of the Alabama job in 2006. Saban does not end up at BAMA. Les rules the SEC for 10 to 15 years, plays in 6 to 8 national titiole games, Coach O's binder is never seen, Joe Burrow does not come to LSU, Nick stays with the Dolphins for three more seasons before returning to college football at Penn State where he wins a national championship but does not have the same run as he had at BAMA,

I'm 100% convinced Miles was agreed to the opportunity but it fell through at the very last minute for whatever reason and Crying Kirk wasn't made aware.

Les could not have fallen into a better situation anywhere at any time that 2005 at LSU. He had tremendous good fortune in that timing. Had we not hired him in 2005 and he's stayed at Okie Lite - I absolutely, 100% believe he'd have been of the Houston Nutt, Brett Bielema level at best the rest of his career.

Perrilloux was expect to be the QB but was cut by Miles due to his antics.
Saban may have not been so quick to cut him. The defense still had some names in 2008, but that was also the year we had 2 DCs…which means no DCs. Saban would have had our defense playing much better than Mallory/Peveto.
I think if Miles leaves for Michigan before Bama got to the national title, Saban could have been lured away.
