Milazzo was out of character on those two passed balls, but did y’all notice how perfect that throw was that was overturned on Ahuna? In real time it looked like he might steal second standing up then all of a sudden it was a bang-bang play. Not super important or anything but I was just very impressed by the pop and throw.

Milazzo is elite defensively. The people who try to argue otherwise are idiots. They don't like his hitting so they just try to rag on him at any possible moment. The only thing that Neal has right now that is better than Milazzo is raw power. I think Milazzo should be starting more honestly.

I was sitting behind home plate. That throw was perfect. Not sure how close it was on the replay but I thought they got him

Those were bad throws by Ack. Tough plays for Milazzo, but he should be able to handle those. After that he was lights out behind the plate. And that throw to second was a laser.

Dude was a wall in the 9th inning.

The throw was perfect, the tag was perfect. The jump was also incredibly good. Milazzo had no business making that a close play. If Thompson holds the tag, he was out, because he came off the base. Also, the ball beat the runner but Thompson didn't quite get him early enough on the swipe.

I think Johnson knows what he's doing honestly.

You are right. So we should just close this discussion board, since there is nothing really to discuss.

Starting Neal for his bat to get a lead and then put in Milazzo to close the game out for the defense is a pretty damn good strategy by coach.

Milazzo has as many RBIs as Neal. Milazzo was hitting .400 coming into the game. My entire point is that maybe we aren't losing as much as the rant tells you with Milazzo hitting.

Neal is hitting below 250 playing 7 sec games. The rest of his at bats other than 2 or 3 games are against terrible competition. So what facts tell us Neal is giving us more at the plate than Milazzo?

The first one was all on Milazzo. He was too worried about framing the pitch and just missed the ball. The second one was a bad throw so I don’t blame him. The run scores anyway if only one of the two pass balls happened so Milazzo/Ack both take the blame for that run.

Milazzo’s bat has improved from the last two seasons. Crazy idea that players can make improvements year to year. Neal’s bat is still better.

Neal’s defense has surprised me. I’m not sure that he isn’t Milazzo’s equal behind the dish. The gap between these two is narrower than everyone expected, on both sides of the ball.

I agree. I give the edge to Milazzo because of his control of base runners, but Neal does that well too. And Neal frames pitches a little better. I give an edge to Milazzo on blocking wild pitches.

I think most of us agree on that.

I honestly see 1 advantage or plus side to having Alex come in the game later innings is that , and perhaps the coaches consider this idk, that he is responsible for catching 6-9 pitchers easily as relievers and closers also likely to be in tight spots near end of game. Where as your starting catcher ( if you pull him consistently each game late) may only catch your few primary starters ( more familiar/ consistently). All this to say coaching staff may have strategic reasons beyond perseverance of Neal stamina 1 game at a time philosophy vs platooning for a variety of reasons including Millazo's defense experience

Yes he is. But the 1 play he makes doesn’t make up for the 4-5 poor plate appearances in a game.

Neal is also an elite defender. Especially his arm. We can point to several instances where he’s made other worldly defensive plays as well.

The reason Millazzo closes out games is because his blocking is so damn good. It allows pitchers to not worry about spiking one every now and then. Neal is still the better option as a starter. The balance JJ is using with those two is perfect imo.

He does.

Neal has a great knack for getting walks and getting on base.

The main thing I’ve noticed is Neal’s repoire with the pitcher’s, especially Skenes. Watch after each inning when the pitchers are walking off the field. Neal is almost always with them smiling and giving them great encouragement.

You think Milazzo is going to hit for the same average as Neal? I don't.
