What does everyone consider competitive? Last year they tied for 7th in the SEC (w ATM) and were very close to making the March Madness tourney. They beat Kentucky, Arkansas, A&M and S Carolina, who all finished ahead of the Tigers. Is just making the dance this year “competitive”? What should we expect? Thoughts?
They were not remotely close to making the NCAAt last year.
They had a NET of like 95. Almost got left out of the NIT
What I expect out of LSU is to win 10-11non conference games (depending how difficult the schedule is) then 500 or better in league play.
That gets you to 19-20 wins and in the mix for a Tournament bid nearly every year.
They checked the conference box last year, but fricked themselves by losing Nicholls and a really bad Kansas St team

You make a great point. EVERYONE knows Wade was the only coach cheating in America. How is life in wonderland???

HOLY SPIT. Are you being serious when you say that most schools weren't paying players before nil????
If so, just WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!
if you truly believe that, how do you get through day to day life being so naive????

Our OOC play cost us dearly in 2023-24.
Yes our OOC play was horific. The schedule was terrible and we still stunk it up - hell we did better OOC in what some (not me) want to call year zero.
Had a good 2 week stretch in SEC play that game me some hope that some progress was being made. But we finished kinda meh. Hope we can gain some momentum and get this thing going. I want him to succeed.

I am impressed with what McMahon is doing with the high school signees. But, for better or worse, college basketball has become all about signing 4th and 5th year transfers to big NIL deals. Obviously a 4th or 5th year NIL deal pays more than overseas which is where these guys would be playing otherwise.

Which recruits did Wade pay?
Posted on 10/1/24 at 8:45 am to DamnStrong
They have historically been on the Recruiting board. About 58 of y'all must have joined yesterday. Not a big deal either way, but all the down voters to the other poster apparently just fell off the turnup truck.

After seeing Duke’s recruiting class from 2024, everyone else may be playing for second place.
_______________
Go look at Arky's current class.

That was the advantage that Wade had. He was paying for recruits when most schools did not. Now everyone is able to pay recruits
Pahaha!!!

McMahon was not horrid in year two and neither are the Tigers near the bottom of SEC basketball. LSU finished at .500 and in the middle pack of the league last season, which is competitive by any reasonable measure in a strong conference.
LSU is going to be picked to finish at or near the bottom of the SEC this season. I'm NOT saying they will finish there. Just giving you the outside perception of the program.
As far as what constitutes "competitive", that is subjective and largely based upon your own personal expectations. I'll say this though, every LSU HC since Dale Brown "retired" reached the NCAA at least within three years. Brady (Year 3 - SEC champ; #4 seed); Johnson (Year 1 - SEC champ; #8 seed); Jones (Year 3 - T3 in SEC; #8 seed); Wade (Year 2 - SEC champ; #3 seed). Now I'm not expecting LSU to compete for the SEC championship this year. But if he doesn't reach the NCAA Tournament, it will be the first time in decades an LSU HC has failed to at least make the tournament within his first three seasons.
The SEC will likely have some very strong teams again. It won't be easy. But "competitive" to me means AT LEAST being in strong consideration for an NCAA Tournament bid come March. Otherwise, it will be very reasonable to ask if LSU is just wasting their time striving to someday reach being "just above average"?

It's LSU related you twit..

We have more than one board you twat.
Lol. I don't care that much either way, but typical response from a ranter to be an ahole. Why you gotta be this way?
At least the comments in this thread are typical ranting about the past two coaches instead of the recruit. Had this been on the recruiting board, the comments might have been about the recruit. You know, like a recruiting announcement should be!

Doubtful. They will be somewhere between 6 to 8. Who do you firmly believe is ahead of them?

Might have to go check him out. Monteverde is like IMG. International student body and caters to high end sports, academics, etc.

We are building something special in Baton Rouge. I hope they can make a big jump this year and then take off.

I hope you are right, that would please me. Still have concerns but I hope they are all unfounded.

Below is the most recent Bracketology by Joe Lunardi. Obviously that's just one guy's opinion. But it gives you a general sense of how others view the SEC teams going into the season.
LINK
Lunardi has 10 SEC teams in the tournament. LSU isn't one of them
Alabama
Auburn
Arkansas
Tennessee
Texas
Ole Miss
Mississippi St
Kentucky
Texas A&M
Florida
Jerry Palm has 11 SEC teams in his preseason bracket. Again, LSU is not listed.
If you look at some more analytics/data based projections LSU is generally placed around 14-16 in the SEC.
Bart Torvik projections
If you are looking at future betting odds some have LSU between 13-15
SEC Championship odds
I'm NOT saying LSU can't have a great season. South Carolina was picked to finish last in the league ahead of last season. Just don't be surprised when the predicted order of finish comes out in a few weeks and LSU is near the bottom.
