Mekhi Wingo is a superstar in the making

Dude was an absolute stud in that game, he single handedly changed the complexion of that first half on defense. FSU runs a TON of counter, huge component of their offense, and MW pretty much neutralized it on his own.
His first step is ELITE and he was shooting gaps/blowing up the counter constantly. In the 2nd half they went to a two back look just to commit another down blocker to Wingo for it to work.
The good news is outside Bama (maybe) there’s not an offensive line on our schedule that will be able to block him without committing multiple guys and/or scheme adjustments. Also, we get Maason Smith back who’s just as capable.
MW is going to be a monster for us all season if he stays healthy, and that first half really showed it. Do yourself a favor and keep a close eye on that dude, if that means rewatching games so be it.

Hopefully he and Smith together are unblockable to the point it makes all offenses look like shite because our secondary won't have to cover anyone.

I don’t think that’s really true either. It does deserve a whole other thread but in a nutshell…
-we’ll never see a passing attack that good, not until a potential playoff.
-Sure chestnut & Alexander are limited but they were in position, they’re going to make plays for us this season against weaker opponents.
-Help is on the way (Welch/Stamps/and maybe Harris) who offer better size and athleticism.
Our secondary is probably our biggest liability on the roster but don’t write them off yet…

This is conjecture
I like the positive vibes but the secondary is a wait and see approach. I dont have any confidence in them at THIS point. I do think the pass rush can help them if Smith and Wingo reak havoc and Perkins is used correctly.

-Not like FSU they can’t. Their QB/OL aren’t on FSUs level either. I’m not saying they stink but they’re nowhere near FSUs caliber.
-More often than not. And most of their big plays this wasn’t the issue, go back and watch.
-Of course it is, what on the Tiger Rant isn’t? They are objectively bigger and you can make a strong argument for athleticism. Does that translate to “help on the way”? Not necessarily, but yes I’m hopeful.
I do agree it’s wait and see, really my point was don’t assume they’re destined to be a glaring weakness on this team. They very well might be but the jury is still out.

Wingo is Kyle Williams. When Williams was here we had another really good DT named Claude Wrotten. Wrotten got all the press similar to Maason Smith while Williams played equally if not better.
This post is not to disparage Maason or Wrotten's play as Tigers but to point out the similarities between Williams and Wingo abilities despite not getting the hype from the media.

1) I also thought that overall coverage was fairly good as far as our guys being in the right place, we just got out athleted a couple of times.
2)imo (and I have not had the heart to rewatch so I may be wrong) it was mostly Sage Ryan being abused early in the game. And other than the long TD, chestnut played pretty damn good. I also don't remember Alexander giving up much. Ryan was the only guy that looked like he was a step behind the whole game.
3) I think this group could turn out to be solid enough to win a lot of games if we can generate a pass rush outside of just Wingo. With Smith returning and Perkins seemingly moving back to the jack plus bringing 13 in on pass rush situations, our pass rush should be much more formidable going forward.

I have hope that BK and company can straighten things up, but honestly my biggest concern at the moment is locker room leaders.
This is the time locker room leaders are absolutely critical. Hopefully they are flourishing as we speak. And helping to get the collective mind right on the team.

You're right. They were in position and they stayed in and fought. They were man handled by the much larger receivers, but they weren't giving up. They were making tackles for the most part. We're not going to see many receivers like those boys. That was just a bad matchup for us.

I agree and don’t think it can be understated. This team took a pretty devastating right hook, can they get off the mat and respond? A lot of that will come down to internal leadership.

Jordan Jefferson looked really good as well, gave old Tyson Jackson vibes back there. If Maason lives up to the hype that gives an elite rotation on the line.

I mean injuries derail anything, but if MS is healthy he’s certainly capable of being an all world wrecking ball on the DL.
