There might be something special brewing on the bayou as LSU men's basketball is beginning to emerge as a competitive program and ready to take the next step into the top third of the Soon to be 16 team conference. The next two seasons will be crucial ones as the nascent Matt Mahon program begins to step up its recruitment and lay the foundation for long term success with high school recruiting and strategic management of the transfer portal while retaining his own core group that have shown promise.

McMahon has recruited program builders rather than likely one and done players. With a long term contract he can afford to develop players and allow the program to seek its level in a steadily progressive manner. The high school recruits of his first two classes are beginning to assert themselves. Tyrell Ward, Jalen Reed and Mike Williams are growing each game. Hopefully Corey Chest will become the force a lot of people believe he can be. The two high school recruits are highly rated. and if he can add a couple more 4 stars in late signing a solid foundation will be there .

We cannot always project the minds of 20 year old athletes but it seems the players have bought into McMahon's system and he wont lose any key players to the portal. Hopefully Daimon Collins gets healthy and lives up to his 5 star rating. With a better team around him maybe Jalen Cook wont feel the need to shoot the teem back into many games and plays more in flow, Derek Fountain continues to provide leadership and character to the program. Wilkinson transfers to a lower level, possibly back to Will Wade.

Tyrell Ward said something interesting when being interviewed by Chris Blair and John Brady after his game winner against Kentucky. H said he is pleased that he had continued to develop under the coaches instead of transferring like players often choose to do when they dont get instant results. That attitude will influence others to be patient and we are also seeing Reed begin to emerge,

If McMahon can bring in a hammer or two from the portal like Mark Sears , Dalton Knecht or Tari Eason to combine with the core group this program will easily be a top 25 program.

Prediction for next season: 23-10, 12-6 SEC and third place in the league. and will win a game and maybe two in the NCAA playoffs.

That’s a big “if”, especially considering his track record. If he doesn’t, we’ll be on the bottom half of the standings for the 3rd straight season.

Program simply isn't there yet.

He has done a good job of getting transfers who are one or two levels down from the big hammers level despite the handicaps he faced. Now he needs to get the All SEC types who somehow didn't get recruited by the top schools out of high school. Also a quality Louisiana transfer every year would help provide depth. Imagine if Jordan Wright was a 6th man instead of a starter.

Knecht is the best player in the SEC. Yes, of course we can be great if you can bring in the conferences best player.

Unironically, McMahon is building LSU like Tennessee in that we can be strong year to year and target that one special player in the portal to put us over the top.

A shooter
Potentially another PG depending on what Cook does
At least one big who can rebound and doesn’t have oven mitts for hands

Yeah, I want that hidden gem from North Dakota State or Lehigh that became a late bloomer and now wants a bigger stage.

Tigers would no longer be a moribund program and would be a draconian opponent for the rest of the league. Maybe Tiger20 emerges from exile.

We have a better chance of winning NCAA titles in both football and baseball for the next 10 consecutive years than the basketball team finishing 3rd in the SEC next season.

He currently has the program poised to be lower middle of the conference again next season. We’ll see see whether he brings in any significant talent before then.

We have a good shot to finish in the top half this year.

Too much trust for next year, when we haven’t seen one ounce of big time talent in 2 years. I’d love to believe, but I’m going to have to see it first. I don’t understand the optimism when all we’ve got is Ward, Reed, Williams coming back. Nice players? Ok. Studs, top 4 difference makers, and all SEC performers? Nope.

Cook? Nah. Collins? Nah. Chest? Nah. If you are counting on that group, then I can’t help you.
Tigers need talent ASAP and it will be another year of having to fill the team with transfers.

Did we overachieve this year? Maybe. Is above .500 in the league a surprise if we get there? Probably. But the lack of talent is alarming compared to the tourney teams, and that needs to get fixed. Show me, coach!

Kept trying to tell the Tards here that we'll have turned a 180 by year 3 and I kept getting downvotes.

The McMahon debacle is what sealed it for me that LSU fans are frickin' stupid.

Only way to win in NCAA basketball is to recruit some of the one-and-dones. Basketball is much more of an individual sport than baseball and football. Having top-100 players come in can drastically make an immediate effect.

Have another downvote. Year 3 is right around the corner, and we aren’t even making the tournament this spring.
