Manny Diaz & Why LSU Will Look Like the Tigers of Old

Manny Diaz has had great success turning around defenses since Mack Brown fired him from UT in 2012.
In 2016, Diaz improved the Miami defense from bottom tier to top tier. Why? Defensive line talent.
RJ Macintosh - 5th Rd.
Ken Norton - 7th Rd.
Anthony Moten - UFA
The bigs in the middle dictated down and distance allowing the pass rushers to create chaos & turnovers. It's the infallible law of college football defense. The other team's QB won't be good enough to beat you if you keep him in 3rd & 6+.
At MSU in 2015, Diaz took over a squad that was 86th in total defense the year prior. He improved that squad thanks to talent like Nelson Adams (UFA) & Nick James (UFA), solid upperclassman performers who played next to Chris Brown (1st Rd).
At LA Tech in 2014, Diaz improved the defense to 35th from 70th the year prior. Again, the common thread is seasoned vets with Vernon Butler (1st Rd.)
So what happens to Diaz when he doesn't have stalwarts in the middle? Mack Brown's 2012 squad had Malcolm Brown (1st Rd.) at DT, but he was only a freshman. UT had big- bodied JUCO transfer Brandon Moore in 2012, but he was oft-injured and unable to fulfill his potential. Tank Jackson was an undersized, injured DT who served as no more than a camp body for the Chiefs in 2015. Diaz had no star power on that 2012 UT squad, and that's how you give up 600 yds rushing to BYU.
Diaz's 2018 DT squad at Miami doesn't have a 1st Rd. pick. Journeyman, Gerald Willis, is closer to Brandon Moore than Chris Jones. Pat Bethel is closer to Tank Jackson than Vernon Butler. Pat Ford is a sophomore 3* product who projects as a poor man's Nick James.
Yeah, Diaz has lots of studs on this Miami defense. Joe & Jaquan Jackson might be 1st rounders. But it's awfully hard to hide a pair of DT's without elite talent. Think LSU's 2013 front with Ego & Freak as the high-end for this UM defense. More realistically, this Miami D compares to LaCouture/Godchaux/Q Thomas of 2014.
Don't look for 600 yds out of LSU's ground game, but don't be surprised when the offense looks more like Les Miles' than Steve Spurrier's.

First upvote (due to mostly agreeing with you)
Add something from our side that fits what you are expecting:
- If the OL is still sorting things our are we more comfortable pass blocking against Diaz's blitzs and twists/stunts, or run blocking?
Answer is obvious. The man loves to stunt when he's below par on the DL... even when not, he still loves to stunt.

We’ve recruited well, have a couple guys we can reload and with returning starters in the midfield and secondary our defense should be better than last year.
True Miami fans are more worried about our O line and QB play vs your D line. If we can’t run the ball it’ll be a long day

I've been around lsu football for 30 years. While I could be wrong, I believe this d will be one of the best we have had. I wouldn't expect your running backs to make a living running the ball.

Darn, this is exactly what I was hoping for

Agreed. It’s gonna be a boring defensive game with field goals.

Our O line needs to step up and play a solid game for us to move the ball

Agreed Justice. I’ll be in Vegas enjoying opening weekend. Hoping for a great game that can’t get here fast enough!

Miami's defensive strengths DBs are going to be facing LSU's strengths on offense in talented (but unproven) WRs, and Miami's weakness on the DL is facing what is presumed to be LSU's weakness in the Oline and running game due to unproven and less than usual talent at the RB position. If the adage of defense is usually ahead of offense in week one is true, then LSU will likely struggle with consistently moving the ball.
Good news is that LSU's defense should be downright nasty under Aranda. 2 preseason all-Americans in Williams and White, Chaisson (who from reports is sounding like he's got the potential to be LSU's best pass rusher in a long time which is scary), Rashard Lawrence, Jacob Phillips, Delpit (all 5 star level recruits)... and depth/size/talent to rotate up front.
Looks to be a slug it out to score type game with most of the consistent/proven talent on defense. Mindset should be stop the big plays and make 'em earn it type thing.
My hope is that Miami's aggressive defense will open the potential for big plays.
My concern is all the new faces trying to work together for LSU on offense compared to Miami having a seasoned QB.
As usual with LSU against good competition, it'll come down to QB play, turnovers and/or special teams production to score enough points for the win (which sounds like every coach speak talking point ever).

After the game, you will understand why Aranda is the highest Paid defensive coordinator in college football.

the OP is in reference to Miami's defense.

Kendrick Norton and rj McIntosh weren’t first rounders or no where near that and look how they performed.... and you obviously don’t know but one of the linebackers dad who post on one of Miami’s sites said there isn’t any drop off and it may be better especially in terms of pass rush at the dt position. He also stated and other insiders have stated that Gerald Willis has been the best dt on the roster the last couple of years even with McIntosh and Norton there. He’s primed to have a great season and is ready. Now the player y’all will get introduced to is Jonathan Garvin next week who our best insider is saying is playing at the highest level on the defense right now which is pretty scary... He has elite tools as an edge rusher

Definite possibility. I’d take those same odds on you seeing after the game why the Coach O hire just isn’t going to work.

The only time I ever paid attention to Diaz was during his tenure at UT where he was a big steaming pile of crap. Didn't BYU rush for 500+ yards on his defense?
I recall the joke around town was people calling him Manny iaz, because he had no D.
If there was ever a defensive coordinator I was concerned about LSU facing, it sure as hell wouldn't be Diaz. I know he's done well at Miami, but there was a LOT of luck that contributed to their success last season. A lot of those turnovers were simply handed to them. Not to take away from what they were able to achieve, but lets also be realistic about it.

agree 100%...
Plus that conference isnt very strong... its the right time for a "Miami" to come back.. North Carolina was down, FSU was down... its really only Clemson and a South Carolina esc Virginia Tech... thats about it..
on that note... give the new TAMU guy a couple of recruiting classes and he will be one that I will be concerned about... He was the one that i was saying we'd have to get if we lost Aranda... that SOB can coach and is a rising star.. of course Durkin may be looking for a new job next year as well.. hes another...
