Mainieri gives his explanation of their season in postgame interview. Get the bus ready

"I just said what I thought it was. We went up against players that were better than ours. I don't know what else to say. The last kid was throwing 99, 100 miles an hour. I don't have anybody throwing 99, 100 miles an hour. Their two starting pitchers the last two days have over 120 strikeouts. You would have to add up three of our pitchers to get to 120 strikeouts. How many home runs does Jared Jones have? 19. We don't have anybody with 19. Sometimes, you have to just be honest about where you're at and what you're up against. The other teams are a little bit more powerful and better arms than we have. We are out there competing as hard as we can with what we have."

Throwing his kids under the bus saying they are arse, ooooof

He’s not wrong, SC is in a bad place personnel wise. I still have no idea why they hired him, or why he took that job at this point in his life. It won’t end well. They’ll be better next year assuredly, but they really couldn’t be any worse.

Oh no! Hope they don’t cry

Honesty is a breath of fresh air in this politically correct world.

That’s one way to look at it but then again it’s true: there’s more talent on the opposing team. It’s not *the* excuse but it is a (valid within reason) excuse when contextualized properly.

Mainieri was always honest. Being honest means sometimes you say negative things about the players.
But he’s right.

He’s not wrong, but he’s also not the guy to fix it.
I have no idea what he or South Carolina were thinking. Almost everyone could see the poor fit.

Throwing kids under the bus would be blaming specific players for specific fails. His words indicate an awareness of the situation. If you or your kids feel this is being thrown under the bus, then we can scrounge up some participation ribbons.

Dude is clueless. He acts like he hasn’t watched college baseball for a decade. He’s been in the stands at LSU watching guys with huge velos and power for the last 4 years.

It also means he isn't taking any personal responsibility

Most are taking his statement out of context.. kind of a message to boosters and admin, you wanna play like the big programs. You have to go out and recruit/buy the best talent. He’s spot on, they are behind the curve.

I have no idea why you'd want a rebuild job at 67 or why you'd hire someone that age. Neither make any sense.

They are. He’s correct.

I don't think it's as terrible as everyone thinks. SC competed this weekend with a young-ish roster. Say what you will about PM (and I've said PLENTY) but we were generally fundamentally sound under him. Good defense, good plate discipline, generally above average pitching for majority of his tenure. Even the down years we weren't a sloppy team.
I think the idea was to bring him in 2-3 seasons and lay that foundation and hand off to someone else. I honestly think that's why Rooney left to go up there.

He's not wrong but at the same time he's responsible for roster construction so ultimately it falls on him. SCar won 13 games and made a regional last year, they've won 6 and missed the postseason entirely under his watch, barring a miracle run to win the SECT. With the portal now, it's his fault he doesn't have anyone that can throw gas and hit for power.

He’s rebuilding that program.
It very well may not work out but the state of that program isn’t due to Mainieri.

His biggest problem will be convincing those top players to commit to him and his program when he won’t be a long term coach

Back up the bus. Turn off the siren. Watch your backs. Mainieri pulling through.
