In light of Andre Anthony being out for the season, Coach O says Masson Smith will form a 3 man rotation with Gaye and Ojulari at the DE spots. I actually am very excited the move and it will benefit the DT rotation as well with Farrel, Evans, Roy, Guillory.

I am praying for Andre Anthony and wish him a speedy recovery. What do you guys think about this move? Smith has looked really good out there and he can set the edge while still rushing the passer.

I’m a little worried about him setting an edge against a jet sweep. Otherwise, he fits the role with an extra 30+ pounds on an insane frame.

I think it's excellent. Having him at DE should really help when it comes to run defense and setting the edge.

Then on 3rd down have him slide inside for an excellent pass rush from the DT position.

I keep saying this but Jarrell Cherry looked really good on Saturday. Makes me more confident with him as a back up.

Do we have any word on Soni Funua?

Sliding him inside on passing down will give us quite the pass rush. We will get pressure only rushing 4 IMO if 3 of the 4 are Gaye, BJ, and Smith. Roy is a solid inside rusher as well.

He didn’t look good at DE to me. His aggression will be used against him. Just let the kid bull rush and play free.

With Anthony out I think this move might be necessary, but keep in mind he didnt say this was permanent, he will still play DT too. He just said he will play DE more than he has been with Anthony out.

Still, Smith looked an awfully lot more successful inside than outside from what I saw this weekend. Obviously it's a new position for Smith though, so he's got to learn.

I loved seeing him play inside. Generally guards and centers, even when together, aren’t as good pass blockers as tackles are and he’s an even bigger mismatch playing there.

However a 3rd down package of BJ, Gaye, Smith, and Roy is going to absolutely destroy people on 3rd downs.

I think he’s much better at DT, but I assume he will adjust well since he’s a beast and I also strangely have faith in the staff to adjust if he’s not doing well there.

Yeah that’s pretty exciting

Definitely a throwback to the Spears/Jackson days when our DE were monsters.

I was surprised to hear he's 6'6 292. That's within the realm of a DE's size.

Getting Logan back will help as well. I think he can play both DT and DE in a 4-3, especially in more neutral downs.

However we can keep him on the field. He and BJ should always be out there.

I know it was limited time against Central Michigan, but Guillory looked pretty good too. Wouldn't mind seeing him more against the run and goal line situations.
