Russell was not as good as people want to remember him. Made bad decisions, threw a lot of picks
Yet Etling in the only one of those QBs with a better TD:INT ratio.

I loved Hodson, but he couldn’t carry Jones jock as a pure passer and neither could Russell.
As someone who watched a lot of those games live, I can safely say, "Get off the crack."
Jones was an incredible passer, no question. Russell was as good, period. Hodson was a different kind of quarterback than either. I always felt Hodson didn't quite have the killer instinct needed for the position, but he was very productive and did great things from the position. We certainly didn't lose very many games during his 4 years due to poor QB play.
But, from a pure passing standpoint, it would take a lot to top Jones and Russell. Davey was a great passer, too, but much of his greatness was due to competitive fire and will to win. That is true of Mauck, Flynn and Tyler (although none of those was the passer Jones, Russell or even Hodson or Davey were).
Heck, from a pure passing standpoint, Mett might be third outright or at least comparable/tied with Davey and/or Hodson.

In this offensive day and age it is a shame that the second best QB in LSU history (yardage wise) is Jeff Wickersham.
Posted on 6/9/18 at 11:26 am to tigahtownhome
Well he was pretty consistent in yardage for 3 straight years. Averaging 2300 yds a year. Not many of the others started for 3 straight years, otherwise they would of smoked his stats.
And just to add he might of had plenty more yards had he not thrown 39 Ints to 25 Tds in 3 seasons starting. That’s pretty terrible.

Tiger1988 the fans were not booing because of our offense, Paul was 6-1 and LSU was 6-1, Bert the year before was 57 of 109 52.3 for 909 yards with 5 tds and 6 ints. and very shaken at times on the field for -118 yards rushing.
The fans booed as Bert was not looked at as being a good option, the fans even booed at Bert at the start of the Notre Dame game.
If Les would have taken a qb 6-1 out and started another qb the fan base would have gone wild, which is what happened to Mac.

You mean how Les didn’t take out a 7-0 Jarret Lee for Jordan Jefferson in 2011?
Or how he wouldn’t take out a miserable Jefferson in the bowl game for anyone on the roster?
The fans aren’t always wrong. Mostly but not always.

Well they probably deserved it, then. I wasn’t around during Bert and Mac, so I believe people like you who know more than me.
I know Les deserved it at times.
Hallman, Dinardo, shite even Saban had some games that made you scratch your head.

Speaking from an opponents point of view and watching football since 1970, Tommy Hodson was the one that gave you the most fits. Absolutely zero question.
1988, I watched Don Lindsey try every single damn defense known to man at them and watched Hodson get out of a play and into the perfect one. He had some injury problems his last couple of seasons that skewed his stats and they had the "Hodry" package that would get him out of his flow in games. He was a warrior and one of the smartest qbs to ever play in the SEC. Had he kept Arnsparger as coach, he throws for 11000 yards and would have had a much better 89 season. In 89, the talent level had dropped around him and he just didnt have the Wendell's and Moss's anymore.
Bert Jones behind him. Had Bert played in todays game he throws for yards like Hodson. He had a rifle that would get him drafted today. Bert just spent his career turning and handing the ball off. I would have thrown the ball 45 times a game with him in 72. They may not have lost but a game in 72 with him doing what the Colts did with Bert. Ask Belichick what he thought of Bert.

TouchdownTony the LSU talent level dropped off in 88 as we lost our 2 starting wr and the three that replaced them only 5-7 Tony Moss could catch. The number of dropped passes in 1988 is amazing, watch the 1988 earthquake game and count the dropped passes and then think that is just 1 game.
Arnspager is a great defensive coach he was not much of an offensive minded coach.

Your list has a few QBs throwing more pics than TDs and were mostly prolific because of R/P scheme.
I mean pic-6 Lee was better than a few you listed and they should have RAT north of 120.

It really is a shame Bert Jones had injuries wreck his career just when it was taking off. The younger crowd doesn't know and may not believe this but he was literally John Elway before John Elway. Playing style, arm strength, running ability, although I think Bert was more accurate. Hell they even both wore #7.

Did you see him play?
Just curious as to what made him better than Tommy Hodson or Russell?

This list is spot on.... except I would put Flynn over Mett.....
Other than that.... Its perfect...........

Had Bert been able to play full-time, all his stats would still be records intact. Period.

Cholly had a little Lloyd Carr disease when it came to Bert. I believe there was another guy, I think named Lyons who Cholly wanted to play desperately. Lyons was a superior athlete who would have been great in a wishbone type offense. He would start Bert, bench him, bring in the other guy, get behind and bring Bert back in to win the game. He did the same with "Woodsminger". Had he played Woodley the entire game in 79, LSU upsets USC. The USC game wasn't on TV and we managed to pick it up on a faint am radio station out of Jackson and because we were number 2 or maybe 3 we needed LSU to win the game and Woodley would move the team and he would bring in Ensminger and we were like, what are you doing??

SHUT UP.... You have ZERO clue what would have happened..............
I was AT the game... LSU played good enough to win that game when they had ZERO BIZ even being on the Field with that great USC team... They got very lucky to even come out of there with a win and EVERY USC player would tell you the dame..........

Jamarcus and Bert are my top 2.
