Hope all of you supporting the racist riots and LSU kowtowing BLM are happy. You all helped cultivate the path to make this happen. You aren’t real Tiger fans

I don’t know how to post pictures, but someone look up the 141st Artillery of the Louisiana National Guard, the Washington Artillery, and see their logo. There’s a TIGER there and they fought BEFORE the Civil War.

BLM and Antifa are only creating more racism. If their goal was to eliminate racism from society they are achieving exactly the opposite. With that said, the Marxist/Democrat Party is achieving the exact goal that they always strive for; which is to divide America. Trump is the first President to force the Marxist Democrats to show their true colors. In 2020 there is absolutely no mistake who the Marxist/Democrats are and what they stand for. Democrats are for anything but “inclusion”. Suppression of free speech and free thought is what they are truly about. No Left leaning Democrat, Progressive, Marxist can deny or defend this position.

First of all, it is named after the famous "Fighting Tigers" of Robert E. Lee's army, who fought so bravely at Gettysburg. Secondly, we should have absolutely no reason to be ashamed or fearful of this name. It is our heritage. Rise up and stop denying your heritage!
There seems to be a small number of fans who accept the notion that the LSU Tigers were named after a Louisiana Civil War unit.

No. The LSU Tigers are NOT named after a Confederate fighting group.

The Bengal Tiger has been the official mascot of Louisiana State University since 1936. LSU chose the Panthera tigris tigris because it was the custom at the time to choose a name based upon a vicious animal. Dr. Charles Coates, who was Dean Emeritus, College of Pure and Applied Science, the Tigers' first coach, and who was affiliated with LSU from 1893-1939, detailed the history of the LSU Tiges in the following letter to the LSU Alumni News in October of 1937:
quote:

It was the custom at that time, for some occult reason, to call football teams by the names of vicious animals; the Yale Bulldogs and the Princeton Tigers, for example. This is still the vogue. It struck me that purple and gold looked Tigerish enough and I suggested that we choose "Louisiana Tigers," all in conference with the boys. The Louisiana Tigers had represented the state in Civil War and had been known for their hard fighting.

This name was applied collectively to the New Orleans Zouaves, the Donaldsonville Cannoniers, and to a number of other Louisiana companies sent to Virginia, who seemed to have the faculty of getting into the hardest part of the fighting and staying there, most of them permanently. One company I knew of went in 200 strong; only 28 returned and many of these were wounded.
How The Tigers Got Their Name - Dr. Charles Coates

So, although the LSU football uniform also reminded Coates of the Tiger Rifles and their colorful uniforms similar to those worn by French Zouaves, and the name had been used by various Louisiana military units that pre-dated the Civil War, the LSU football team was named after the cat (in accordance with custom at the time), not a military unit.

The tiger head symbol came from the Washington Artillery of New Orleans. A militia unit that traces its history back to the 1830s, the Washington Artillery had a logo that featured a snarling tiger's head that was the model for the original image that adorned LSU's football helmet.

Most people are smart and have a life and cannot ever post 5,000 posts in a lifetime much less 100,000+. I only have about 3,500 posts since joining around 2004-05, and I only started maybe 2-3 threads, but earned my right to start some without your magic number of 5,000

I think LSU should officially announce they are getting rid of the Tiger mascot name that was named after a group of Confederate soldiers and officially announce their new nickname...Tigers...after the big cat from India.

BLM are terrorist. Just like the KKK. Anyone who supports BLM are just as bad. BLM cannot deny the riots, theft and murder they committed over the past few months.

Going after LSU's mascot is pretty thin. I have to wonder what is next? Will the BLM movement demand the state of Louisiana change its name? After all, the state was part of the confederacy during the civil war. Not to mention, Louis the XIV, our state's namesake, issued the Code Noir in 1685 regulating interaction between blacks and whites, of which a version made its way to Louisiana in 1724. That was just a short 300 years ago.

Maybe he should research the Advocates editorial pages from before 1970 and see if any staff opinions were racists?
If so then the Advocate should close and liquidate as well as all other newspapers.

I agree with geauxeng above. Let's go back to the TP/Advocate & review their editorial page in the 50's & 60"s. Times change. But only the progressives want selective memories. I am 75 & have read either the TP or the Advocate each morning when I lived in NOLA (or at LSU). No more. People my age vote with our feet. No money to LSU once they took the name of the hero of The Bulge off of the library & now this is enough of the liberal slant from the Georges'. Enough is enough.

And the Democratic party was racist and fought against desegregation. So, they should also have to change their name and be dismantled like the statues.

People still haven’t caught on. They’re erasing everything so that it can be rebranded via China’s communist consent. This isn’t a civil issue it’s 100% political overthrow of western culture.

We should go protest in front of the Advocate building!

No, never mind, we should not stoop so low as to mimic the radical lefties who are attempting to ruin this great nation!

This person is trying to convince you through shoddy history "alternatives" to abandon your heritage. Don't take the bait from this snowflake.
