Summary of Saturday's Game

Rankings should be updated tomorrow sometime. I expect LSU to jump to the 12-14 range.

Dumb question, but why isn't Cal Berkeley in that poll?

Cal and BYU play in the Varsity Cup which is separate from D1.

Basically D1 rugby instituted new eligibility requirements. They changed it so that your eligibility clock starts from when you graduate high school versus when you start college. It's now 6 years to play 5 from high school graduation. It hurt Cal and BYU's plan of having a college rugby team made up of 23-26 year old players. So they threw a fit took their ball and went home.

Though the level of competition between Varsity Cup and D1A is roughly equivalent. Varsity Cup has Cal and BYU; D1A has Life, St. Mary's and Arkansas St. Some teams, like Oklahoma and Arizona play in both competitions.

GoffRugbyReport.com does a complete ranking regardless of division. They had LSU #19 and Oklahoma #18 going into last weekend. LSU will probably jump to #14 or #15 in that poll as well.

LSU stomps previously unbeated Oklahoma 43-12 in a hard fought physical game. The tiger defense was relentless all game in smashing the OU attack. This win puts LSU in the drivers seat for the conference. Next up is Texas Tech In Dallas.

I was out there watching. LSU needs better scrumhalf service. I know Wes isn't normally a #9. Is there someone else who can play 9 and Wes can get into the centers? Also the LSU forwards are going to need to be fitter to make a playoff run.

The Tigers look to go to 7-0 for the season when they face Texas Tech this weekend. In order to ease travel, the game will be played in Dallas at TCU's field.

So far this season LSU has had an average margin of victory of 43 points, and no team has come within 31 points. A blowout win is expected against Texas Tech but as long as the Tigers can get a win and stay healthy this trip will be a success. This is a potential trap game with a trip to long time rivals Texas A&M coming up on the schedule.

LSU defeats Texas Tech 91-5. A variety of players scored the 15 tries. Alec Miller converted 8 of 15. @D1ARugby @RedRiverRugby @lsu

LSU continues it's domination of the Red River Conference with a huge defeat of Texas Tech, 91-5.

Next week it's Texas A&M's turn on the chopping block in College Station.

What does our ranking mean? This isn't an NCAA-sanctioned sport, right? So who does the rankings?

The D1A rankings are sponsored by USA Rugby. They are compiled by various writers and coaches throughout the country.
Alex Goff, who is probably the top sports writer for American rugby at the high school and collegiate levels does his own rankings as well. These rankings are at least as valid as basketball or football rankings.

You are right in that it is not an NCAA sport. They play under the umbrella of USA Rugby. USA Rugby runs all rugby in the United States from international down to youth levels.

Here's a good article on this team. And a link to updated rankings.

Underappreciated LSU Keeps On Winning

D1A Rankings - LSU #13

I was incorrect about the rankings saying that they don't matter. They actually decide seeding for the playoffs. Also conference winners are seeded higher than at-large bids.

This is a huge deal. If LSU wins out they have a realistic shot at making the Final Four. Current projections have LSU hosting a first round game against a lower seed (UC Santa Barbara or Arizona) then travelling to Indiana for the round of 8. Both are games that this team could win. This looks like it could be a special year for this group of guys.

That's awesome.

There's a local Rugby club in my hometown that has been doing very well. My son (11) was going to play but we he found out it was flag rugby he wanted to wait till he was 13 so he can play full contact

Where can one find all time rugby records? LSU ever won it all?

Also, why did LSU change conferences?
