LSU Professors are “outraged”

*let me preface by stating I am a recent graduate*
LSU professors are throwing pity parties via twitter over the BK million dollar overpay. Many of which claim to be “serfs” against the “elites”.
I personally find the whole argument insufferable and insulting toward academia as a whole. LSU athletics, particularly football, is at least a 100 million-dollar enterprise.
So what BK was paid extra (1) he’s paying it back towards the athletic department; (2) hell ask the fan base and the overwhelming majority will say he deserves it.
The hypocrisy lies in the fact that many of these “intellectuals” seemingly project Marxist propaganda towards classes ranging approx 10-15 students.
Half of them shouldn’t have a job, nevertheless should they even speak on matters concerning revenue they couldn’t bring in themselves.
*maybe this is a rant, however if you attended LSU recently you’d agree with my sentiment*

Mann bitches about everything so I wouldn't take him too seriously.

I work at a community college with a winning baseball program. We don't have the best facilities for what this team has accomplished over the years. They basically raise every dollar they need for upgrades, etc. Anytime there is mention of athletics getting this or that, you can see the Liberal Arts department mainly roll their eyes lol. What makes it extra funny is that you see these people either wearing LSU football gear or professional sports gear. Professors will always hold this grudge towards athletics because it's fun to watch and outside people will pay to go see it. No one wants to give them extra money for bullshite degrees.

Is this about Mann? He's a dipshit. Ignore him.

You won't put 100k people in Tiger Stadium to watch someone take a math test.

I'm all for a college focusing on eduction and agree that college athletics is overblown in many cases. But, SEC football is a billion enterprise, gives focus for alumni and community participation, and is an overall "good" for a university that has good college athletics in all sports. Some make money and some don't, but all benefit from it, including the athletes.
While good arguments can be made over the influence of money on college athletics and education, Mann's constant harping is completely out of line. Any liberal arts professors who publicly complain about what Brian Kelly, or any coach makes, are lucky they have a job. Could you imagine an employee of any other entity still having a job if they publicly complained about a primary revenue stream of the organization that employs them?
These professors are out of their minds. College sports is not evil or immoral. You can talk about where emphasis for a university should be and how these are student-athletes and how they should get a good education, which Kelly IS emphasizing and seeking to improve. The professors should laud that and work with him to improve LSU's education ranking instead of being publicly jealous over what he gets paid.
Just ridiculous.

He, Kelly, may be overpaid but I know those in Academia are overpaid.
Without the "student loan" rip off of tax payers, many of those would be homeless.

quote:I have an uncle in Tuscaloosa who's very connected to the University. Years ago, during Saban's first few years there, he was getting paid a huge salary (nowhere near what he's making now, but still a massive amount for that time). Some Bama folks were questioning that salary, just like these LSU professor are doing.

My uncle was aware of a study done that showed Saban's success at Bama brought in many, many times more money to the University than he was paid. And applications to attend the University rose dramatically, because the football team provides massive promotion of the school.
In other words, Saban was an investment that paid off hugely for Bama (and still does).
When the psychology department generates $100 million in revenue, then we can talk about their salaries.

He will go take care of him

Nothing says “serf” more than being a $100,000/yr tenured professor who does absolutely nothing useful for a living. Those poor people who haven’t ever done a day of work in their lives and still live very comfortably

Those who can’t do, teach.

I remember the professors bitching and moaning about Jerry Stovall’s raise to $300k in the early 80’s!

Very true, but putting 100k people in Tiger Stadium helps the math department since TAF donates money to academia.

A professor for a crappy journalism school complaining about how much an SEC head coach makes is kind of like a twitter junior engineer complaining about how much Elon Musk makes.
