1 is accurate, and a case could be made for 2 (they beat Bama and went to the CFP last year). 3/4/5 are likely interchangeable.
Ole Miss will still likely be solid this year. Alabama will still be Bama even if taking a step back. LSU is poised to be good.

Damn. I miss the days of being top 5 in the country, not top 5 in your conference.

Ole Miss might get their "dream season" with all the offensive talent, but I also feel like they'll screw it up somehow.
I fully expect them to be reminded YAOM.

Possibly. But then you look at their schedule and struggle to find another game besides @ LSU and home vs. Georgia that is tough. Their first 4 games are non-conf and complete dogshit.
They open SEC play with Kentucky at home, before going to South Carolina and LSU. After that is a bye, before playing OU at home. They follow that up with Georgia at home and then another bye. They then play @ Florida, but it will be the final game for Florida in a 4 game stretch vs Georgia, @ Texas, LSU, Ole Miss. No one has a more brutal 4 game stretch than that. After that, they finish at home vs. Miss. St.
Who is Ole Miss going to lose to besides @ LSU and UGA?:
Kentucky
@ South Carolina
@ Arkansas
@ Florida
Oklahoma
Miss. State
The stars have aligned for Ole Miss. Lots of returning production, lots of potential impact transfers, and a schedule against which they should, at worst, go 10-2. If Ole Miss doesn't make the CFP this year it will be a massive failure.

I think Texas, Bama, and Ole Miss are all being overrated a bit. I don't think there is much separation between those 3 teams and LSU.
UGA
Bama/LSU/Ole Miss/Texas
Mizzu/Tennessee/Kentucky/Oklahoma
TAMU/Auburn/Florida
South Carolina/Arkansas
Miss St/Vandy
This isn't based on records for me. It's based on how good i think the teams will be and how close they are to others in that group. For example, I think both Tennessee and Mizzu could go 10-2 because they have decent-above average teams playing a weak (by SEC standards) schedule.
I will say this though, i think each grouping has a closely projected record attached to that group.
Group 1, UGA, is 10-2 to 12-0
Group 2 is 9-3 to 11-1
Group 3 is 8-4 to 10-2
Group 4 is 6-6 to 8-4
Group 5 is 4-8 to 6-6
Group 6 is 3-9 to 5-7

No way. Texas returns most starters plus adding Bama’s WR2 and starting TE from last year. They will go 10-2 or 11-1. I have them vs LSU in the title game both at 11-1.

Funny you say that I think Ole Miss is underrated on that list. They destroyed the portal and already have an elite offense that's returning. I think you can make an argument for them in the top 2 easy. I know Ole Miss doesn't have a history of success but they have a good coach and they were good last year.
LSU on the road coming off a road game vs South Carolina. That South Carolina game is sandwiched between what will likely be a ranked Kentucky at home and a top 15 LSU on the road coming off a bye week. Also you know the record for SEC teams in back to back road SEC games right?
Then later in the year they have another 3 game stretch where they play Oklahoma at home, on the road vs Arkansas, then back home vs UGA. Arkansas is 100% a trap game. Ole Miss always has trouble with Arkansas.
They could easily lose to LSU on the road then UGA at home. They could also beat LSU or UGA, and get upset by South Carolina or Arkansas on the road.

this is about as fair as a preseason ranking can get

Why does that matter? They're far more likely to make the playoffs than LSU just by schedule alone. Their team is very good. They went all in for this year as their window to finally win something. If it's going to be any year it's this year. Even if it ends up like you said they'll probably at most have 2 losses and if they're unlucky, 3 which probably gives them enough clout to snag a playoff spot. That would be a dangerous low seed for anyone in the country to be playing looking at Ole Miss on paper they have a top 2-3 SEC team this year.
They're actually being generous to LSU I think. Looking at LSU's schedule they're more likely to miss the playoffs just by schedule alone even if they're one of the top 5 most talented teams in SEC. LSU also has the most questions in that top 5 outside Bama. They could've easily ranked LSU much lower but they have obvious respect towards BK. Schedules in rankings like this shouldn't be so easily overlooked. Even if LSU is a good team this year a few ball rolls one opposite way can ruin their season with how brutal their schedule is. Ole Miss can slip up multiple times and still slip into the playoffs. LSU has far less margin for error on their schedule.

I don’t know man Texas has a stacked roster and favorable schedule. If they don’t go far in the playoffs something went wrong
Posted on 7/19/24 at 7:11 pm to skullhawk
I hope Texas gets the dog shite kicked out of them every single week in the SEC their first year in.

Ole miss had a soft schedule last year but wow they get one again. I refuse to ever really respect their chances to win the west (remind me when they’ve done it before - oh wait). They’ll be 8-4 or 9-3 tops again and realize that’s their ceiling.
Posted on 7/19/24 at 7:27 pm to skullhawk
I think that’s pretty fair

Being 5th in a preseason poll will have zero bearing on the playoff.

Texas at 2 is absolutely ridiculous. . They lose at least 3 total games this year , possibly 4.
Posted on 7/19/24 at 8:56 pm to michael corleone
Bama is going to have a rough year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them lose 4 games.
Texas and OU will have some adjustment to the physicality of the league every week.
