I’d be more ok with all this bullshite if athletes were tied to their home state the way Olympians are tied to their country.

ETA. Does everyone realize that the justification for NIL and free transfers could apply equally to high school sports?
So technically the LHSAA shouldn’t be able to set eligibility rules tied to location.

Not exactly true. Most all P5 schools are paying football players Cost Of Attendence in addition to scholarship and housing. This started 3-4 yrs ago. COA is a federal financial aid number specific to each school and is probably about $5K per semester now.

Not really. HS's are not marketing and making money off their HS sports like colleges. This is the driving force for NIL. CFB players were judged to be noncompensated participants in a for profit system

That’s an even weaker argument (on their part) than the argument that they are free people and should be able to earn whatever someone is willing to pay them.

The system can only function with the participation of lots of people who aren’t paid as well for their efforts as the athletes who are receiving a free education and all the other freebies that come with being a college athlete while being able to develop and showcase their abilities for a future payday in a professional league.

Good info

The real questions to be answered for me are
how much will our market bring to a single player ?
And
How much in total across all players?

It concerns me that we might be regional and be too limited and the opportunities will be both limited in scale and amount compared to Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Miami, Seattle etc. those markets offer national brands as well as regional brands. That could equate to more players and higher amounts per player.

Texas put together a private foundation and three in 10 million or so, chump change for them and is now paying all offensive lineman 50k a year. They will soon add a bunch of other foundations and pay every player over 250 a head per rumor.

That’s about as direct as you can get bro.

Its semantics.

It's not semantics. The difference between paying an athlete directly and convincing one of your boosters to pay that athlete directly is two different things. The difference between paying big money to have your company logo seen by millions of spectators every weekend in support of an elite university or program isn't the same as giving a teenage athlete that is prone to doing dumb, teenage things (Think Derrius Guice, Drake Davis, Janzen Jackson level dumb) large sums of money.

They’ve basically legalized schools using shell companies. Or at least made it near impossible to police.

They may as well have legalized salaries, at least you’d be able to regulate/tab better.

I'm not saying that people aren't cheating. I'm saying it isn't legal for schools to directly pay players.

Also, I know we need to have a better NIL department to help kids get deals.

This isn't exactly true. Schools are allowed to pay stipends, and those payments vary among schools.

He is specifically talking about NIL. Additionally, those stipend payments have been around for awhile and the dollar amounts are set, offered to all scholarship players and have to be approved by the NCAA.

LSU gets money from boosters to help support the program. Now LSU just solicits boosters to give money directly to the player to support the program. As someone already said, it's just semantics at this point.

That is silly. Ala, Ga, and A&M are just paying more + other things that LSU does not do. LSU simply doesn't play by the same rules as those teams, and it is basically why LSU is in the middle of the SECW, and will remain until LSU changes to follow the lead of those teams.

Well, yeah

So Alabama or TAMU is not paying their players more than LSU because they are not paying their players.

Players have been getting paid for years.

If that's actually happening, it damn sure is direct pay.

So you don't think Fisher is not contacting rich donors & directing them towards certain players? USC and all those S.Calif. millionaires getting together? You are very very naive .

Take out NIL and it’s just like it’s always been.

The direct cash, especially at the top, is a little more absurd than it was but if you think about it when they were paying bills, X amount of dollar handshakes, hiring relatives, etc the money for most players is probably about the same as before it’s just in the open now.

How could you possible ignore the poaching going on from one program to another?

Some of you are blind.
