I’ve heard it said before skip was brought in exclusively to push the tradition fee and start the pay to park model

Its sadly nowhere near what it used to be. And it ain't going to get no better

The cost of doing business in college athletics is ever increasing. I understand why LSU (and other schools) are trying to squeeze every dime they can.
That said, the City of Baton Rouge is missing a HUGE opportunity to profit from the 7 most profitable days of the year in the city. And it's something that would also greatly benefit fans...EFFICIENT PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION on game day.
CATS does a bus service. But it's as if third graders are in charge of it. It is usually a huge clusterfrick. But what if the city could get their shite together? People could park downtown and at other sites, then pay $10-$15 for a roundtrip bus ticket.
1. It would help alleviate some of the traffic congestion
2. It would be far cheaper for fans instead of paying the $60+ to park on campus
3. CATS could make a ton of money they otherwise would not receive.
I'm sure many here have been to ball games in larger cities. Many people use public transportation to get to/from the games. And honestly, that's probably the only time many use public transportation.

Yep. Most of the spots on campus required permits starting around 2011. I noticed a massive decline in gameday atmosphere around the stadium that year. Even the infamous 2012 LSU/Alabama game had fewer tailgates and tailgaters on campus than low-teir SEC games (Vandy, Kentucky, Miss State, etc) drew in 2010. The stated reason was to reduce traffic by reducing the number of people on campus not at the games, but the new restrictions resulted in blocking off so many streets that getting away from campus was far far far more difficult. Traffic could not as quickly diffuse because even though there may be fewer cars, they had less places to go.
Alleva assumed getting rid of all of these extra bodies was good because so many of them weren’t paying for tickets and attending games. However, without these extra people attending these big parties all over and around campus, a whole lot of people who did buy tickets found that hosting these huge tailgate parties was no longer worth it either. Once they no longer thought tailgating before the game was worth the cost/trouble, many stopped going to the games entirely.
By attempting to squeeze just a little bit more revenue out of people, a noticeable chunk of customers straight up quit participating entirely, resulting in thousands more empty seats and unsold tickets.
Returning free parking to much of campus would improve attendence and recruiting tremendously as well as help with traffic by giving fans a reason to space out their arrivals and departures. Fans with a tailgate to return to don’t drive away right at the end of the game. They hang out and cook and watch the late slate of games for a couple more hours. Spacing out car reduces the gridlock and improves traffic flow.

My major question is this:
What is the money made from parking used for...specifically?
If the answer is the football program, stadium upgrades, etc, then the bubble will burst. You already see declining attendance across the nation. At some point, the only program’s thriving will be the ones that have rich fan bases that pay for that shite. Eventually, you’ll have 90,000 seat stadiums 50% full for even good games.
If the answer is that the money is used on bullshite organizations like the tranny acceptance club or some shite...then we are all screwed.
Does the money go to coaching buyouts? If so, fans should determine who gets fired and when. We know that will never happen. Maybe we can choose the AD instead.
Does the money help support sports that exist because of Title IX?
Does the money go into scholarship funds?
I seriously think that the arms race and rising cost of college athletics combined with the CTE scare could seriously harm the sport.

While I agree I am not even sure bringing in a new AD would mean going back to free parking. thats just not how things work. you can't put toothpase back in the tube.
LSU decided to treat its fans like customers. but the fans are the bad guys for leaving early or worse, not showing up at all.

The key is not to take away something that was free and start charging for it. The key is to add a new option and charge for that. For example, if they built a new parking garage or lot, no one would complain about that new lot charging money. However, roping off a bunch of lots were people had been parking for free for 60 years will hack people off.
In my opinion, LSU needs to ditch all contraflow, all street blockades, and send all the traffic cops home. All they do is block up traffic and make things worse.
They need to free up campus within the gates and a few of the lots that now cost money that didn’t used to 10 years ago.
They need to follow the Atlanta Falcons model and drastically lower concessions prices and increase product consistency (no more running out of waters five minutes into the game or biting into food that’s still frozen in the middle). This will stop the practice of people planning to avoid eating at games and cause people to start planning to eat at games. Atlanta proved the concept as profits and sales went through the roof after lowering prices.
If the band is in the stands, the music comes from them and them only. College football isn’t the NFL, and that’s a good thing. That’s a selling point. Stop trying to make college like the NFL and instead focus on highlighting the things that make it unique like the pageantry, marching band, cheers, and traditional songs.
Stop f$&king with the Greeks. Let them drink and party. It’s a huge selling point for the school. You’re not the Harvard of the South, you’re a mid tier state school, AND THAT’s OK!!!! You’re one of the best bargian colleges in the U.S. and offer some seriously unique experiences no other college does, and those drunken greek douchebags are a big part of that. You will impress far more potential students (i.e. customers) by embracing being a party school then by this massive overcorrection to attempt to change your image. Louisiana is a party state with a drinking culture. It’s not a liability, but actually a resource if framed and marketed properly.
End the on-campus smoking ban. Nicotine addicts watch sports too, and games are really f$&king long. Plus, the stadium is an open bowl, so cigarette smoke disipates quickly. especially in the upper decks. Just have a smoking section or smoke pins that are accessible so the nicotine addicts won’t be fidgeting by the 3rd quarter needing their fix.
Finally, stop this nonsense and just f$&king sell beer already. This would massively reduce binge drinking by people trying to get shite-faced enough pre-game so their buzz can make it through a 4 hour game. They typically end up borderline hungover by halftime, so they leave early so they can get back to drinking or go back to their apts and sleep. Obviously, if people could buy alcohol at the stadium that wasn’t too over-priced, they would drink less before the game and space out their drinking throughout. Far fewer fans would leave early, and those who do drink will drink more safely.

Texas A&M actually has free parking north of campus in a business park and bus rides (free) to the stadium. I've used this on a couple of occasions and it works very well.
So does Auburn.

You make it sound like contraflow is something new that LSU just started doing. Can you imagine trying to empty campus with normal traffic conditions (i.e. red lights on normal schedule)

They’ve been doing it for years and it’s a complete clusterf$&k every week. There’s no consistency or predictability. One week, your lot sends you north. The next week, the contraflow sends you south. One week, all traffic is funnelled down Nicholson because Burbank is blocked off. The next, you can go down Burbank, but you’re not allowed to make any left turns all the way until it becomes siegan.
At this point, they need to just cut out this unnecessary expense and stop paying so many cops to incompetently direct traffic, or more commonly, sit in their cars blocking lanes of traffic for no reason while doing nothing.

Yes. I did this weekly throughout the early 2000’s when tailgating was much more robust and the stadium only slightly smaller. Traffic was much much much better. The more police, the worse the traffic got.

They have had contraflow and traffic controls during this time.

Not nearly to the extent they do now, and Nicholson, Dalrymple, River Road, and Burbank still were premitted travel in both directions. True contraflow is a relatively recent phenomenon (this decade).
Sure, they had parking passes back then too, but a far far larger percentage of parking area was free as well.

I think the parking changes are on F King. He wants to turn gameday at LSU into a Pac12 experience....start tailgating 6 hours before kickoff and get gone as soon as the game ends.

The only thing I'll say is that this was posted on the SEC rant and the other big time programs(Bama, AU, UGA, A&M) all said that they don't have any free parking on/near their campuses.
Paying to park isn't really a problem. It's the amount of reserved sports. That kind of limits people that just want to grab some tickets and head to a game or two a season. They make it a giant pain in the arse for those people. That's why the walk up ticket crowd has become almost non-existent.
Posted on 9/6/18 at 1:48 pm to MightyYat
Well, LSU also had the best game day experience in the SEC.
The fans are revolting. It's showing up in the ticket sales. Of course, Alleva is too proud to admit it.

There is more free parking than the map shows at first glance but the university does not want to make people aware of it. If you can find a spot, the parking by all the dorms is "free." I have never gotten a ticket or towed for parking by the dorms on the weekend. During the week its a different story. I don't even think its against the rules on the weekends and even if it was all the parking staff is keeping common folks from the reserved lots.
