If this were recruiting motivated, wouldn't it have made more sense to announce this the week after the bowl game?

Why? So it's forgotten about by the time NSD rolls around? What exactly would the advantage be to announce it 3 weeks ago?

No. The extension was announced today to build momentum for the final push before NSD. This is a massive recruiting weekend for us. Like it or not, the extension represents stability and the notion that Orgeron will be here long-term, which is important to recruits who are trying to decide where to spend the "next three to four years" of their lives.

Who are we making a final push for, and do those recruits honestly care about the stability of the program? We know Sophser's recruitment surrounds his brother.

Why not announce this 3 weeks ago and start building momentum then?

He deserves 6-7 years?

Yes

Some details on his current contract: LINK

quote:

Orgeron will make $3.5 million per year as part of a five-year contract, details The Advocate reported on the day he was named permanent coach. The school confirmed those numbers in documents released Thursday.

quote:

Orgeron's two-way buyout with the program is $12 million this year and drops every subsequent year of the contract. It slips to $8.5 million in 2018, $6 million in 2019, $4.5 million in 2020 and just $1 million for the final year.

And Jimbo’s contract is the product of a school with limitless money hiring away a National Championship winnign Coach from a P5 school.

That’s the kinda contract you end up with as

That’s a freakish outlier. We can’t be like “well Jimbos’s buyout is...”

other buyouts of SEC coaches as of Dec 1 this year:
LINK
Jimbo - 68MM
Saban - 33.5MM
Malzahn - 32MM
Kirby - 28MM
Muschamp - 18MM
Stoops - 15MM
Morris - 12.5MM
Mullen - 12MM
Pruitt - 12MM
Orgeron - 5.2MM

It was asked if his buyout was average. Based on other SEC HCs, it's well below average currently. Take that as you will.

Also you’re comparing total buyouts when some of these guys have 2-4 more years on their contract.

Are you serious? You think players are concerned enough about a coach's contract that they will avoid going to a school where a coach doesn't have at least 4 years remaining, but they are simple minded enough to forget if a coach was extended 3 weeks ago?

Also, with a big recruiting weekend coming up, this was not a coincidence. This was an orchestrated maneuver to generate positive buzz and create a talking point with recruits.

It creates an aura of stability, whether it's real or false.

Who are we making a final push for

Jeez, dude. We have like 3 major defensive line recruits coming this weekend. Also Devonta Lee from Amite. Alabama commit Christian Williams. And many more. There will be many high, high quality targets on campus this weekend. It's going to be our biggest recruiting weekend of the year.

No. He's out of the picture (for now). He's a 2020 recruit now. He wasn't going to qualify this year so he reclassified.

O buyout went back up Jan 1st.

A “cheap” buyout relative to coaches much earlier in the contracts with a lot more years in them.

Do any of you trust Alleva in this contract negotiation?

“who feels better”

5-3 in the SEC which is the exact same place we were 3 yrs ago and a lower ranked O than the one lots of folks were having a kitten over with Cam makes we ask, why the rush?

I would have preferred to allow 2019 to play out before offering a contract extension, but that’s just me.

Agreed, we should’ve pulled an Aaron Donald and waited after next season before considering offering an extension before the final year of his contract frick

Whatever dude. Not sure why you've resorted to personal insults.

I think you don't have a very good grasp on how fickle recruiting can be. Often the last sales pitch a recruit gets is the one that sticks. I'm not saying they wouldn't be able to remember, but the excitement would have worn off and it wouldn't be as fresh in anyone's mind.

There is no doubt in my mind the timing of this announcement was to kick off this recruiting weekend. We've been hearing it was coming for months. You think the timing is just a coincidence?

How many years left is largely irrelevant. The total amount is all that matters because that’s what LSU actually pays out. His buyout, right now, is extremely manageable. That’s why most are ok if that doesnt change with his raise

And no I don’t trust Alleva but I’ll reserve judgment until terns are released

Right, Moore who has more crystal balls for Auburn than any other team (who's coach might have the hottest of hot seats this year), Sophser who is more concerned with a scholarship offer for his brother than anything else, and Young who is currently committed to Alabama.

Also Devonta Lee from Amite

Been rumored that he is a silent commit for a while now.

Again, if we are trying to flip kids from Bama (Williams and Young), wouldn't it have helped to announce the extension 3 weeks ago? I was told that Saban has been in these players' ears about the lack of stability of the program and using O's contract as a negative recruitment tool. Wouldn't it make sense to limit his ability to negatively recruit O?
