I was there. I camped out for that game and the Kentucky game that year. Both were awesome games but we lost both.

I was at that game and it was amazing. The crowd was on Laettner in a way that would be downright revolting to modern ears and eyes, but at the time, it all seemed to be about whether Laettner could be rattled. He could not.

I have said ever since and I will say it now that I have never seen anyone handle a hostile crowd so well. He took it in stride, outplayed Shaq, and Duke whipped a very good Tiger team.

It wasn't just LSU that would do that to Laettner.....UNC did it all the time as did Clemson.....we were pretty mean and loud about it though

I was there and I was also at the LSU-Duke game in Cameron Indoor Stadium as a graduate student. I wore my Gold and Purple Tiger Stripe gloves and cheered for the Tigers. Was on the receiving end of a chant "stupid gloves, stupid gloves". Another chant was directed at Shaq: "1-2-3-4, Shaq can't play that game no more". My mother recalls that at the next home game at LSU, the cheerleaders tried to teach a cheer to the LSU fans, one they "learned at the Duke game". Went over like a lead balloon, apparently. My daughter is currently camped out in a tent waiting for the UNC game.

Didn’t they also chant CBA CBA CBA

The Cameron Crazies are at least entertaining

They also chanted "orphan" at Scott Williams a few months after Williams' father killed his mom and then himself, when North Carolina came to Cameron.

Hilarious.

But shame on LSU students for calling Laettner a homo.

I was a freshman, living here n Power Hall at the time. I camped out for two days for this game. It was awesome. The atmosphere was incredible. Laetner was awesome. Other than losing, it was a great couple of days.

The irony of the fact that the 17 year old...a guy smack dab in iGen who is largely to blame for the safe space bullshite we are all so tired off... has to explain this shite to someone older is hilarious. Congrats, kid...you get it. Great question, and it's always fantastic to have a chance to relive some of the great moments in LSU sports when younger fans are genuinely interested and ask. Also...congrats on perfectly using "twat."

I agree with all of this. He had a great reply. The two sky screaming about being mature just got out matured by a 17 year old kid.

I wasn’t at that game but I know what it feels like to be there. There is no better high for me than these LSU sport experiences. The 2003 Georgia football game was that type of atmosphere. You can literally feel the energy of the crowd. That’s no exaggeration. I hope I get to experience that again. The 2003 Georgia, 2003 Auburn were my favorite. I’m sure the 2007 Florida game was just as amazing. This Duke game looks to be the same.

It really was a great thing to experience, though they were outplayed in the end.

But mainly, I just think about the fun of camping out days beforehand, having so little sleep in a gross tent, a group of people watching porn on a tiny TV to kill time, etc.

And it's also kinda cool to have seen the squad that won probably the greatest college basketball game of all time (East Regional final 1992).

Agreed, I think Shaq was doing a good job most of the game distributing the ball around and not forcing shots and we had a good offensive flow most of the game and were winning most of the game.

But at the end I got the feeling he wanted to show he was better than Laettner and he forced some shots he should not have, and the game turned there.

It's important to remember that they played each other the year prior in Durham, and Laettner outplayed him in that game as well.

And I'd have to think he got under Shaq's skin a little bit when he told him afterward, "Good game. Keep improving."
