Men's basketball made money but also received 4.3 million from media rights deals while the women had 0. Instead outside football and men's basketball all other sports were consolidated to the tune of $23.9 million.

So not surprising that men would report a profit while women have a lose. LSU has 21 total sponsored sports. If you take the 23.9 million media rights and divide it by the other 19 sports, suddenly baseball and women's basketball break even.

This is correct. On the financial reports, it looks worse than it really is for baseball and even more so for women's basketball. They are all lumped into the "other sports" media rights deal, but the reality of that deal is that it is primarily driven by women's basketball and baseball. So if you took off a portion and allocated it to those two sports, the numbers would look much better.

What you cannot measure, is the KM effect. She was the most prolific fund raiser at Baylor and part of the reason she is here is because the new AD tried to reign that in. KM may be worth more to athletics than all the other Coaches but BK. Mulkey says something and it ends up on Sportscenter. She is invaluable to the program and basically fell in Woodward's lap. There are not many Coaches with her cache.

I am not a fan of Woodward's hiring ability. He did not have to give BK a 10 year contract, he fell into KMM, and I think Johnson has some flaws that has led LSU to lose it's position in baseball among the SEC. I think replacing WW was a political move, especially when you consider where the other Coaches that were included in the scandal are today.

Another thing people need to realize is that Woodward got his start in LA politics. He is arguably one of the most important people in the State because LSU is the flagship. There are a ton of other factors at play when LSU makes a coaching change. The last eight years under JBE was highly political at LSU. Just look at who was on the BOS. Anyone remember Edwards using LSU to raise taxes, saying we may not be able to play football. Well, he put Collis Temple on the BOS, so basketball is where it is because someone wants it that way.

Woodward needs to focus on football, the rest are essentially irrelevant to revenue considering where the TV money comes from. Men's basketball only makes money at most schools because of the tournament. The NCAA also said they were changing the payouts for the women's tournament, which they have been hoarding that money for years. So that may adjust some of WBB revenues.

This is the first year the NCAA is awarding 'units' to teams that make the tournament and advance for the women's side like they've been doing on the men's side for decades. This season that total pot is $15M, but by 2027 that number will be $25M. It will then increase by 2.9% each year, same as the men's pot. Those numbers obviously pale in comparison to the men's tournament, but it's a huge increase in funding nonetheless.

In the expense report, this is what LSU claims to have spent on each sport:

Men's basketball - $10,750,988
Women's basketball - $11,874,940

The big difference is coaches salary where CKM made $3,621,117 and CMM made $2,922,950. Support staff was also a big difference at $997,688 for women and $457,540 for men.

However look at what LSU spent on recruiting for both:

Men's basketball - $824,827
Women's basketball - $405,546

Now obviously LSU does not include NIL, as that is outside sources. But I feel like a lot of that is on the head coach and their staff.

So yeah, it's not like LSU is spending $8 for every $1 for the men. And against as a whole LSU only made 2 million profit. So if they suddenly spend another 6 million for men's basketball, now they are operating at a loss.

The media rights are negotiated to include football. The conferences want coverage of all their sports so the networks are included in big packages. If not you wouldn’t see near the coverage that we enjoy.

There would be no SEC network without football. Not like wd know if now.

Right. It was said the women's tournament could have brought it a bigger deal if it was on its own (like the men's tournament is), but if you did that, the media deal for the other sports would be gutted.

Found an article that averaged it out.
quote:

The formula can be complicated, but the bottom line is conferences will receive $113,000 for each game a women’s team plays in the NCAA Tournament. The conferences will divvy that money up to their schools however they see fit.

SEC teams have earned 25 units so far in the NCAAW tournament. It appears that units are paid annually for the next six years. So I would expect the conference payout from the NCAAW tournament to at least be x6 six years from now.

Meanwhile, the men's team has been receiving these payouts based on conference success.

I asked grok to create a chart for SEC schools. This is 2023 data so it's different than the OP. Grok says it does not have access to all 2024 data.

Alabama is doing this right.

Question.

Is the donation back to the university included in “expenses”?

Otherwise woody is doing a really poor job.

The athletic department USED to be so profitable it donated millions back to the university

That chart is for men's basketball only. The athletics department still donates money back to the university.

Most of the Men’s Basketball revenue came from their share of conference TV and tournament revenues. Most of WBB’s revenue was direct. Shifting spending from WBB to MBB would mostly just shift revenue as well. It wouldn’t significantly change the net bottom line.

Performance is a different story altogether. WBB has produced an NC, an Elite 8, and a current appearance in at least the Sweet 16. No matter how much money they threw at MBB, especially with the current coach, they weren’t going to do anywhere near that well. From that perspective, it was an appropriate allocation of resources.
