When I say the title I said would have beat anybody but Miami the way LSU was playing at the end of the year.

That '01 SECCG was one of my favorites because I really thought the game was over when Rohan went out. I was so pissed. Then Mauck came in and threw and ran all over Tenn. couldn't believe it.

But I think you're overselling that admittedly great Miami team and underselling the LSU squad if you don't see a reasonable chance of an upset
I guess ANYTHING is possible. But if both teams played at their best, Miami wins goin away. FACT.

Rohan and Reed teamed up for the best bubble screen tandem I've ever seen... Hopefully Mett and OBJ take a page out of their book next year.

We were really lucky that TN beat Florida the week before (in a game that had to be rescheduled because of Sept 11). Florida was soooo much better than TN, I was shocked that Florida lost that game at home. The one home game I got to see that year was one of the all team beat downs in Tiger Stadium. Rex Grossman, Gaffney and Caldwell torched us. As someone indicated in a previous post, our secondary was probably the weak link and UF really exposed it.

I'm not a Miami fan by any stretch, but their 2001 team was one of the best of all time. There were 16 first round draft picks on that team. Their RBs were Clinton Portis, Willis McGahee and Frank Gore. Shockey was TE, Andre Johnson was a WR. Their defense had Vince Wilfork, Vilma and Ed Reed. Just a ton of depth, just like ....

This x100000000

Florida would have destroyed us again. That first game was absolutely the worst beat down I've ever seen a good LSU team take in Tiger Stadium or anywhere else. Our secondary was TERRIBLE.

Everyone hates on Hookfin, but Erin Damond was the worst player to ever line up in our secondary.

Our offense was fantastic by the end of the year, but as several others have said, I really don't even know if we beat UT if Rohan stayed in. Our passing game couldn't get going against their D, and they had no answer for Mauck's draws.

Great team with some of my favorite Tigers ever like JReed, Rohan, Toe, DD, Trev, Bradie, Corbello, but I'm glad things worked out the way they did so that we can play the what if game with them. Because the reality would not have been as fun against Florida or Miami.

Oh yeah, and anyone trying to play down the Miami 01 team didn't watch them play from 2000-2002, except for maybe the 02 BCSCG so they think they were overrated because OSU upset them.

Now, the 06 LSU would have beaten anyone in the country at the end of the year and it wouldn't have been all that close IMO.

I think that team wouldn't have beaten anyone, but would not have blown out UF or USC.

That 2001 team struggled to find itself early. WE had a lackluster performance against a very bad KY team too. I think we won like 29-25 or something like that.

Last second pass from Davey to Clayton as I recall. That was one LSU team that improved 100% from the beginning of the season to the end. I agree they probably couldn't have beaten the star-studded 'Canes but they damn sure would've scored their share of points on any team in the country by years end. Reed was absoulutely uncoverable; defeating double-teams like it was child's play.

Yeah Miami won. If Miami and LSU would've played in the National Championship, I guarantee LSU by at least 20. to LSU

IMO the gauntlet that the 2005 LSu team went on was completely unreal. If Miles doesn't take the foot off UT on Monday night I think the 2005 tigers have a legit claim at one of the best squads to ever play here.

One thing I fondly remember from the 2001 season is the Davey to Reed connection absolutely torching Bama. Davey was 35-44 for 528 yards. Reed caught 19 passes for 293 yards. LSU won 35-21.

Rohan was the man! I thought that he was a sure bet for the pros. He did hang around for a while. You talk about another controversy, I thought he should have started way before he finally got the chance.

lol, wut? We are not talking about the 2011 Red Sox that didn't even make the playoffs, they were the only undefeated team and won the BCS CG, over a 3 year span they lost 2 games: 2000 at Wash by 5 who went 11-1 and won the Rose Bowl (over Drew Brees) and in OT in the 2002 BCS CG to tOSU. When you win titles, only lose 2 games and have a shite load of talent, you are one of the best ever.
that has nothing to do with what always hear about that Miami team and that was they were so great because so many of their players went to the NFL. If you want to base it on merits of what they did in college, ok I can buy that. But you can't say they were so great because so many of their players went to the NFL.

quote:

thats the case the 1987 LSU team would be the greatest team in LSU history

That team was 10-1-1 and finished #5, between 1969 and 2003 that's the best team LSU had. While there were a good # of pro's on that team, I doubt it has more than 2003, 2006 or 2007.

I don't know the numbers, but you would be shocked at the number of players off the 1987 LSU team that signed pro contracts.

I was living in Lin-colon, Neb. that season. What irony the Children of the Corn in my huge workplace kept harassing me all season for not caring about their overrated team. Then they had to cheer for mine so theirs could fall arse-1st into the BCS title game.
The Corn was really mediocre that season. They beat exactly 1 team who finished w/ a winning record, by 7 pts @ home. I knew for sure that the BCS was worthless when a team couldn't win its division but is somehow #2 in the country. Sound familiar?
