Let’s settle the “days of rest debate” finally.

As far as I know, you can count the day of the game as a rest period, some disagree.
So if a pitcher pitches on Sunday afternoon and then is scheduled to pitch on Friday afternoon, how many days of rest did he get?
I say 5. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
What say you?

After seeing Cooper and Evans absolute light shite up out of nowhere recently, I'm just going to trust JJ.

It's 4 days rest.
But, it doesn't matter. You can't invent rest by re-labeling it.
Standard rest for a starter in college baseball is 6 days (by the standard definition) or 7 days by your definition. It's the same amount of rest.
A lot of people try and justify short rest by redefining it.

You don't count the day he pitches as a "day of rest"

How does this even make sense?

Why would you count the day that someone pitches as a day of rest?
Posted on 6/9/25 at 10:18 am to bhtigerfan
You can count it if you want, it’s just that no one associated with baseball counts it that way.
So if you do choose to do it then you have to tack on another day to whatever you consider “normal”. Example, Anderson pitches Friday and the following Friday for a “normal” week of 6 days rest. If you want to count the day he pitches as “rest”, which is not correct, then you would have to say his “normal” is 7 days.

Inevitably, it's going to be so that he can justify a decision to pitch on short rest by pretending it isn't short rest. It's coming.

You can’t start the clock until the player has 1 sleep
There isn’t a debate lol

It seems the OP considers someone going to work at 1 or 7 pm had a day off.
That makes no sense.

Some of you are counting full calendar days.

There is no debate, at least not amongst people that know the game.
Eyanson threw last night. If he throws on Saturday he will be pitching on 5 days rest (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday being the rest days).

There is no debate, the terminology is always used the same by coaches and the baseball media. What you described is 4 days of rest. You are welcome to argue if that is correct usage or not, but it effectively means the number of days a player has not pitched in a game.
As an example and a starting point, if you pitch in a game today, then pitch in a game again tomorrow, is the pitching with no rest or pitching with one day of rest? Most would say that is pitching with no rest. So, if you extrapolate that out (pitch today, don't pitch tomorrow, pitch the next day is one day's rest, for example), you see the number of days between starts is the number of days of rest in the accepted method used by all baseball staff and media.

As mentioned above, if you want to get technical with the number of hours then you must also redefine what normal is.

It’s semantics.

There’s no debate. Mon-Thurs is four days rest, period.
