It was luck, leading to a comic-book finish.
It was definitely mostly luck. The point is that occasionally a team finds itself in a situation in which it has to score a TD on the next play and they are farther away than the QB can throw it.
Every team has a play to call in that situation. That is nothing special. What is special about Nick Saban is that they practiced that play every week. So when it happened, and lightening struck, everyone was in the right position. Without that last little bit, all the luck would have amounted to nothing.

You won't see another play like that in a million years.
You’ll see it in the next twenty years - probably a lot less.

the defense was actually very good but the offense again let the team down. If Miles would have not been stubborn that could have been a very successful football team. Had the talent and the experience.

I also went to the Auburn game that season.
I lovingly refer to that game as the Buyout Bowl. Whichever coach lost (Miles or Gus) was getting shitcanned

I'm from Chicago and I drove up to Lambeau Field to watch this hellish game. We walked out and the cheeseheads we're taunting my 5 year old son and he was crying all the way to the car. It was the most depressed I ever was leaving an LSU game until last year's Texas A&M game...
Both bad memories but hopefully we're about to go for a Championship run like Saban and Bama did

Going into summer all we heard was Les was handing the keys over and we would throw the ball more… all to literally watch 100 toss dives against UW in Lambeau.

The Florida game that year is one that I still cannot believe we lost. That was one of the weirdest games ever and McElwain was such a shitass. It did make beating them in the swamp the following year a week after the Troy disaster that much better though

Yep.
LSU dominated that game.
1st possession LSU goes 80 yards for a TD.
2nd possession LSU gets to the Florida 2 yard line...then Guice fumbles. It looked like it was going to be 14-3 midway through the 2nd quarter. Instead, it's only 7-3 at HT with LSU holding a huge advantage in total yards.
LSU gets the ball to start the 2nd half. They drive to FL 1 but can't punch it in. Then, the holder drops the snap on the FG try from the 8 yard line. Two drives LSU gets inside the FL 10 and comes away with 0 points. That would happen again at the end with Guice stopped on the final play at the goalline
I figured that ended any small chance O had of being named the permanent HC.
