He got O on the cheap (by today’s standards). O isn’t going anywhere; he’s here to stay. That makes it easy on Alleva. ADs don’t like coaching hires. Coaching hires are high risk; they make or break you as an AD. They are like Election years to the stock market.

Winning championships doesn’t matter as much as long continued varying amounts of success. You have a governor and a president telling him that they will not allow the bank to be opened up. They are not paying a HC $7M a year. They are not writing 8 year contracts.

Knowing this, Alleva is thrilled with the current situation. He hired a HC for not much money, has a HC That is unlikely to leave or be poached by another team, and is capable of accomplishing winning seasons at this school. He doesn’t have to deal with a coaching hire. Money is still rolling in with tickets, tv, tailgating, parking, concessions, donations. Prices will rise, people will pay the increases. His bosses in the governor and president are happy because the team is winning and money is being saved and made.

They are happy. Everyone is happy. Maybe some fans are disgruntled and unsatisfied but who cares? They don’t matter. There are plenty of fans, and even those that are disgruntled will by and large still hang around.

So you’re not competing for championships and Alabama has you in it’s rear view mirror and A&M is passing you on the left. So what? You’re still getting winning seasons and going to bowls. Money is being made and saved, risk is at a minimum, their long term staying power is good and at their discretion.

F King Alexander and Alleva are smoking cigars, having brandies, sitting in leather chairs, feeling good and smiling.

Enjoy it. You’re living in the Bronze Age Of LSU football.

I wish I could write a check to hire a head coach that the Rant wants.

Who would that be?

The OP has some legitimate points.

I don't like it any more than the rest of us, but the AD's job is really about money.

As long as the revenue continues to flow in, he's safe.

I read this and got sad because it is the truth. I remember Bel Edwards was saying that LSU may have to sit out a year because of monetary issues. I believe in O but I don’t believe in Ensminger.

nothing will change until season ticket sales are down hugely big, then and only then, will they feel pressured to give us something better

The most expensive thing in college sports
is empty seats and that expense was up this year.
He is concerned

Alleva is a bean counter.

He’s not a competitive guy. He’s not a risk taker. He’s not a rah rah rallying prideful guy. He’s not a take no prisoners approach guy. You remember the movie “Raw Deal” with Schwarzenegger? Alleva doesn’t believe that. His movie would be “Nice Deal.”

He’s a risk averse low profile bean counter.

I did my part dropping my 4 after FKing caused Alleva to fumble the Jimbo hire. That is the only thing that will make an impression, and I’m not convinced even that matters much to the idiots we have running LSU (FKA and BOS)

If you want to compete at the highest level you have to pay. LSU doesn’t want to pay. You know where that leaves us.

The whole premise of your post is stupid. How does it make it easy on Alleva?
A disinterested fanbase is not a win for Alleva. Pissed off boosters is a not a win for Alleva. FWIW, Alleva doesn't need the job or the aggravation. He certainly doesn't want to invite a shite storm if Orgeron bottoms out, which is possible. In football you're either progressing or regressing. If Orgeron can't keep the talent up and the product on the field is boring or the results are pedestrian, decline will accelerate.

You're right about one thing: hiring a coach is high risk. There are no guarantees. A number of the coaches the Rant preferred have cratered: Fuentes, Fedora et al and Fleck isn't setting the world on fire at Minnesota. Jeremy Foley was purported to be the GOAT AD and he whiffed on three HC hires after Spurrier.

That can, and does, change at every school. It's variable.

Jeff Long at Arky would be my example.

And when the psyche flips on you, it happens fast and you are probably done when it happens. That's why it flipped without warning on that AD anyway.

This is what many fail to realize. There is one more year left on the CBS contract with the SEC and its a paltry $55m per year a tiny little contract. After 2019 season that contract will be up for grabs, ESPNABC, FoxSports who knows? The new dollar amount will be massive compared to the current contract if the precedents set by FOX and the Big 10 is any guide. Keep in mind that LSU Bama was and is the highest rated TV cfb game of the year and it was a blow out, what if it had been close? The Fox/Big10 deal signed last year was $440,000,000 per year for 6 years, the new SEC deal will certainly surpass that but even if its only $500m, that's $53.7m per SEC school per year up from $3.9m per school under the current CBS contract.

Nobody hates the SEC and their retarded scheduling, brain dead referees and overall appearance of being obvious Bama homers more than me but ......... no ones going anywhere with all that extra green about to come raining down. The fans and players would love to get out from under the door mat the SEC lays out for everyone else but all the money gets split evenly.

From purely cynical viewpoint if the SEC is rigged for Bama (sure seems that way) there's no way that changes until the inks on the contract.

Maybe after its signed the powers that be will decide to even things out, move the office fire the Bama refs and scheduling guys and boost rating by watching Bama have to play fair with everyone and maybe lose a few - some would say the drama as opposed to foregone conclusion each week would actually help ratings. If that happens guessing it could be during the first season 2020 under the new contract. Even then it will take few years for the after effects of a decade of friendly league treatment towards the Tide to wear off but Tua will have left for the pros by then.

As soon as LSU endures a losing season, though... the money will run dry.

I’ve seen it happen. In the early nineties, the 72,000 seat stadium was half to 2/3 full for most home games.

If they think LSU fans won’t stay home with a bad product out there, they’re crazy.
