Lessons that can be learned from this Bama exodus?

Surely, Woodward and other ADs are taking notes on this transition of power from Saban to Deboer.

As long as the portal is set up the way it is now you must figure out a way to clot the bleeding going from one coach to another.

I know the coach in waiting model hasn't seemed to work out in the past, but maybe that transparency and foreknowledge helps smooth the transition

It tells me that loyalty to your school and program is at an all time low. But we knew that.

You'd have to do like Duke basketball and announce retirement before final season and give someone on staff the Head Coach in Waiting title.

Only works if the replacement is already on staff.

This topic doesn't belong here, but Saban thought he was clever by waiting until classes started at Bama before leaving, thinking it would lock guys in for at least a year. That plan backfired.

There’s no lesson to be learned. Anytime you are overhauling a coaching staff, you are going to have guys leave. The fact that the coach leaving is the greatest coach of all time just amplifies it. The majority of those kids went to Alabama because of Nick Saban. I still think Alabama will be able to recruit well because they have built up that brand, but they were bound to have a bunch of guys leave no matter what. I think the only coach that could have somewhat limited the amount of players that leave would have been Kirby.

You really think Saban wasn’t smart enough to think about that?

The best way to counteract that is to focus more on instate recruits. It doesn't eliminate the problem, but it mitigates it.

Good point. It sucks for schools that don’t have as good of an instate talent pool that LSU usually has.

I think the biggest lesson was that Saban had become the brand at Alabama and the school itself was not the draw. Once he left, all those national recruits had no reason to want to stay.

I dont. I havent seen anybody that predicted the amount of player exodus that has happened since the new coach was hired. Everybody predicted a drop off of performance simply because Saban is gone.

Bama would have been better off announcing before the season ended but they got greedy and thought they could trap this recruiting class

Loyalty for the most part was always manufactured by the rules. Kids weren't going to transfer if they had to sit out. Kids would have done the same thing 5 years ago if they could have.

I think a big part of it is Bama was able to not pay nearly as much for top players because Saban was there. Players were willing to take less to be under Saban. But with him gone, they want their payday and Bama isn't equipped to do that right now to that level for all these players.

That’s because there was no time for predictions. It happened just 9 days ago. He announced he was retiring and people started entering the portal. I think the majority of people would predict that when the greatest coach of all time unexpectedly retires, that there will be players that leave.

Do you know when Saban made up his mind? Do you think they should have announced that Saban was leaving the week before they play in a semi final game?

It's a sign of the times really. This generation likes to keep their options open and they live for today only, even to their own detriment. That's why they arent getting maried and opt for pets instead of children. Hell, I hire people and see their updated resume on indeed the same week! A bird in the hand I guess

It's not LSU, I don't want to learn from it.

I suggested to a friend tgat this approach may become the new norm for these schools. They are definitely monitoring the bama implosion and are trying to take steps to mitigate such a disaster but I also think Bama made an all time goofy coaching hire and they did it because of arrogance. What a miscalculation to think these kids were going to stay around for a guy they don’t know from the west coast.

The lesson is to have a great plan for NIL. Bama was getting the Saban discount. When he left, that discount expired with players and Bama clearly didn't have an answer.
