So did JD5 make Kelly Great, like Fournette Guice Tyrann and many many others made Miles win and win and win ...and did the OC leave because his value (JD5 enhanced) Kelly had to do something about the defensive side, maybe Alleva pissed Miles off etc etc etc anyway I disagree about lacking Brains and Balls. If Kelly gets as many wins as Miles did in his first decade I'll be really happy! Then again I eat grass??

This defense was also so historically bad so as to warrant a mass firing. How did we build and allow it to happen to literally field a division II defense?

You’re selling Les short. He never needed to make wholesale staff changes—just a piece or two here and there. Les just had an honorable way of doing it. Whether one season of the disastrous Malveto, or just Peveto, or Crowton, or Gonzales, those staff members always remarkably seemed to have another job lined up once it was obvious they needed to go.

But, yeah, Les was loyal, or stubborn, regarding the OC to a fault. And it cost him his job.

Miles had one glaring weakness. He didn't have a clue how to recruit and develop qb's. The b2b duo of Jennings and Harris accelerated the decline.

Perriloux dismissal prevented multiple natties. Had Perriloux not been stupid, Les would be challenging Saban as the goat. Miles was actually the better in game coach.

IMHO after 2008 it really didn't matter who the OC was, it was Les's offense. He may not have been calling all the plays but he set the template for what the offense would be and the menu from which to choose from in calling plays.

I’m of the camp that if 2008 wasn’t a turnover nightmare that seemingly gave Les PTSD thanks to Perrilloux getting kicked off, we would have had the Mad Hatter for years more, and he wouldn’t have locked like he did on the super conservative offense

We didn't win a title in 2006 because of Les's love of conservative offense.

Don't compare "0" to a national championship winner.
Are we in "Alignment" yet?

Miles is horrible as an offensive mind. But he won because he had NFL talent all over the field and someone else always ran the defense.

Kelly also has the security of 100,000,000 and 7 more years on his contract.

BK once fired a guy who was in his wedding. That’s how committed he is to winning

With only like 12 signees in his first class because Saban gave up on recruiting.

Les had more important things on his mind.
Somewhere there was a cheerleader that needed comforting.

This (2007 NC) would not have happened had Nick Saban not come to Baton Rouge. Saban built the foundation upon which all other modern day LSU NCs are based.

Attributing the 2007 NC solely to the talents (cough) of Miles is tantamount to Stolen Valor. Suck up your pride, Tiger fans. Give credit where credit is due and be thankful.

The whole offensive coordinator thing still boggles my mind. Les went out and grabbed Gary Crowton and Cam Cameron. Both of whom LSU fans were excited about considering their backgrounds.

Maybe it was Les's fault after initial success of both they faded, maybe it was their failure to adapt. However this idea that Les was scared to fire people is comical as he got rid of people all the time. Like it's revisionist history based on how it played out, plus a bit spoiled based on the 2019 offense and the past two seasons offense.

Miles guided LSU thru its golden era, and yet everyone shits on him. He did an amazing job.

It was the winningest decade in program history. I will never understand the echo chamber hate.

Are we praising BK for putting together a staff that was so bad that he had to fire all of them after their 2nd year? What a spin zone

Okay, but let's give credit where it is truly due, and it ain't Saban.

Gerry DiNardo took over LSU in December 1994. In 1995, LSU went 7-4-1 and beat Saban in the Independence Bowl. In 1996, LSU went 10-2. In 1997, LSU went 9-3.

DiNardo woke the sleeping giant. He got LSU into the Top Ten in 1997 and 1998.

DiNardo brought in Faulk and a host of players that ended up winning a NC under Saban.

DiNardo had issues, but a big problem he had was that LSU was too fricking cheap to play football at an elite level.

Mark Emmert saw DiNardo's success and the reasons for his failures. He decided it was time for LSU to play big-time football rather than skimping nickels and dimes.

He offered Saban a five-year contract for $1.2 million annually. Only three other coaches in the country were getting paid a million per year: Bowden, Spurrier, and Fulmer.

By contrast, DiNardo's buyout for FOUR contract years was LESS than ONE year of Saban's contract. DiNardo's buyout was $600,000 for the four years of $150,000 salary. Saban's salary was $1.2 million.

LSU (Emmert) decided to play at an elite level in 1999. Then Emmert hired Saban. Saban did not cause the change to play at an elite level. To the contrary, Saban was a result of that change. He was the coach who received the benefit of that change in direction.

Emmert, Bertman, the Board, and the boosters built the facilities needed to play at an elite level.

Saban did NOT lay the foundation for this program to keep being successful. The 2007 and 2019 Natties are not the result of Saban coming to Baton Rouge.

The LSU administration changed directions before Saban arrived.

Saban was the beneficiary of that change, NOT the cause of it.

Emmert, the Board, and the boosters watched DiNardo rebuild LSU recruiting and the LSU program. Where were you? They decided to play big-money football, and open up the budget and pay a coach 8 times more than the previous coach.

Saban was in the right place at the right time. LSU was finally ready to spend. Saban benefitted from it, but he did no cause it.

He had the worst offensive philosophy you can think of for the athletes he was bringing in to LSU. The years of ugly garbage offense permanently damaged the LSU fan base.

This.

I remember watching the Arky @ LSU game in 2009, thinking we had enough talent on the field to win the game by multiple TDs, but squeaked out a 3-point win in the 4th. Which worked regularly, until it didn’t, and was never fun to watch.

I knew in 2009 the offense was being choked, and I knew it would last for years.

What a joy 2019 was.
