Is everyone pretty much in agreement that Latz will see the mound today?

We last saw him Friday meaning he's had 3 days full rest which is plenty considering he only threw a limited amount of pitches.

But I had a concern then and it's coming to fruition. If Latz does throw today, what will his availability be for the super? We are talking about a guy with long-documented health issues who hasn't thrown very much pitch in 3 games in 8 or 9 days. And even with his arm trouble, he's going to be a big prospect for next year. So is there too much risk? Either throwing him at all today or sat/sun? Or is this something not even on the radar?

They've been so careful with him that I feel like as long as they keep his pitch count low today and potentially next week, he'll be fine.

Use him today if we need him, worry about the Supers once(if) we get there.

Which is part of my question... Do they continue to protect him or let him go 3 times in that span?

You know as well as I that the pitches thrown in an inning are only a fraction of the total a pitcher throws in the course of an appearance. And if it does take him longer to warm up, then he's already got even more than typical.

So I guess him pitching on 5/17, 5/21, and 5/24 wouldn't ease these concerns?

College baseball can't go with that mindset anymore. Coaches recruit on protecting arms. How do you think O'sullivan gets so many guys at that shite place in Florida? He promises to protect them at all costs.

Pitching more is part of his recovery. I don't think we'll abuse him like Graham would.

None of know how his arm is feeling. If he has any soreness or they think there is even the tiniest amount of worry for a setback, he should not pitch. If he feels good and wants to play baseball then he should be a guy we see today. I'm sure by now Latz and the coaches are pretty in sync with where his arm is at. I trust they'll do the best thing for the kid first, especially with how slow they've brought him along.

Id actually like to see him start the first 2 innings. Hopefully he can shut them down and allow us to get an early lead. Then we unleash the bullpen that we did not unleash last night

I think he goes 3 times with very low pitch counts. Friday to Tuesday is 3 days rest, then Tuesday to Saturday or Sunday is 3-4 days rest.

I think they would be ok using him that often as long as his pitch count stays very very reasonable.

if he is not able to throw again on 3 days rest after throwing only 13 pitches, then yes that should say a lot about what can expect from him going forward THIS season. If he does throw today and goes 2-3 innings, I see no reason why he wouldn't be available for the supers that start 4 days later. I don't think there should be too much risk at all. And eventually, the kid is going to have to pitch on a regular basis, whether that be as a long reliever or a starter. If he can't be ready to go every 4 days as a long reliever, I'm not sure how much of a prospect he'll be.

Let Latz throw 45 pitches. He will be 100% available on three days rest for a Saturday game.

We have three guys who we can count on to, in all likelihood, hold down Rice. They are Bugg, Latz and Newman. I think they can go 4,3, and 3 innings respectively. Those are maximum numbers, so more likely we have about 8 innings there. That should be more than enough to beat Rice today.

I'm not saying to not protect his arm. I read your original post as if to wonder if we use him today (assuming he's well rested and good to go) then we might not be able to use him in the Supers devoid of an injury possibility.

I don't think him pitching today would have a major affect on his availability for the Supers. We have Poche & Lange to start Sat & Sun; so the earliest he would expect to have any significant work would be on Monday which is 6 days after today's start. Plus, they aren't going to have him throw more than 40 pitches, I think that has been pretty evident from how Dunn & PM are handling him.

He threw 20, 20, 28 pitches. Threw 13 Friday. When he was pulled, I was relieved and said he'd pitch again in the tournament. I'm asking the questions I had then. I think, like Mickey said, they'd have to keep him low around 20 pitches for him to still be available in 4 days.

I would throw Latz 2-3 innings today and it wouldn't be overusing him, imo.

If we get a Sa-Su-Mo SR, we can hold him out till Sun or Mon.

He is one the better options today. If we don't use him and we lose to Rice, a fresh Latz has no value next weekend.

I don't have an answer to your questions but just wanted to say that they are very reasonable questions.

If they still do some supers with SSM schedule instead of the FSS schedule, we'd obviously hope for the later one and maybe try not to use Latz until Sunday, but that's still quite a bit of use relative to his situation.

I don't think he will have an extended outing today, by normal standards anyway, and he likely wouldn't be used unless there is an If game in the Super on Monday. That would give him 5 days. Non issue imo.

as long as he doesnt have soreness (big if) i see no reason why he wouldnt be available by game 2 of the super on Sunday.

Oh so that's how you get kids to turn down millions to come to college. I was wondering myself.
