I understand these rules are being made in the name of player safety, and who can really be against player safety. But football will eventually kill itself with rules. When the game changes too much, a large part of the fanbase will no longer watch.

The kickoff is the dumbest part of football. And the play most likely to result in injury. It’s not pussification. It’s being smart about eliminating an unnecessary aspect of the game to make it safer. Are you really so distraught about them eliminating the flying wedge 60 years ago to save the sport? Or were they pussies then too?

Wow.

This is absurd and does little to promote player safety.

All it does is kill a facet of impact for special teams.

Congrats kicker, you can’t pin them at the 5 yard line anymore because ANY fair catch there automatically goes to the 25!

The kickoff is one of the most exciting plays...they've tried to kill it, even at high school level.

Slippery slope continues. Football will not be recognizable in 20 years.

Rugby is pretty awesome I've discovered, btw.

the player can still opt to return the kick. I can see that happening a good bit during the season because the kicking team will start relaxing thinking it will surely be a fair catch and the return team busts it. I think the new rule is ok

The Football Rules Committee made the proposal to continue efforts to increase the number of touchbacks during kickoffs since fewer injuries occur during kickoffs that result in touchbacks than on kickoffs that are returned.

And even fewer injuries occur during timeouts and play stoppages. Perhaps they should just flip a coin to decide not the kicking team, but the winner then go home.

It’s okay, if you hate variety.

It rewards pure offensive teams while weakening teams that could have held their own on defense/special teams

And that has been the trend for some time, however I’ll agree some rules were needed.

Everyone get ready for more 70-74 slug feats!

So dumb, make it the 20 yard line at the very least. Make it a trade off of 25 for touchback and 20 for fair catch, so they lose 5 by not just letting it go.

Maybe with that, it still keeps catching it as a compromise and opens up the opportunity for second guessing.

Honestly, LSU is one of the few teams that can't seem to consistently kick the ball through the end zone for a touchback...this may actually help us.

Why?

They keep using the excuse that it is for safety but I have yet to see any data that states more injuries occur on kickoffs.
You know why? because it is bullshite. Just like the fricking horse collar rule, another fabricated lie.

mass X acceleration = force

If they really want less forceful contact, limit player weight and player speed.

That will never happen.

The number one cause of concussions in the United States is caused by bicycle crashes/spills. Should we outlaw bikes?
