mass X acceleration = force

If they really want less forceful contact, limit player weight and player speed.

You can't limit speed that is God given but you can control size to a degree. if these candy asses honestly cared about safety they would limit player weight according to the position that they play. Of course this will never happen.

The kickoff is the dumbest part of football. And the play most likely to result in injury. It’s not pussification. It’s being smart about eliminating an unnecessary aspect of the game to make it safer

I get that. But you are now significantly limiting one of the most exciting plays in the game.

How many games and even championships were won in large part because of a big play of a kickoff. Would hate to see that go away.

What about the kids who never play more than a role on special teams? 80% of the time, they'll just run down the field and then trot back to the sidelines.

the player can still opt to return the kick. I can see that happening a good bit during the season because the kicking team will start relaxing thinking it will surely be a fair catch and the return team busts it. I think the new rule is ok

Maybe. I think it also increases the likelihood of a penalty against the kicking team by twice as much, at least. More guys are straight running down as opposed to rushing a punter, someone is going to claim not seeing the fair catch signal. Often. Annoying rule.

They keep using the excuse that it is for safety but I have yet to see any data that states more injuries occur on kickoffs.
You know why? because it is bull shite. Just like the fricking horse collar rule, another fabricated lie.

It's football. One of the main facets of the game is punsihing the opposing player. Half the team makes a living tackling and hitting the opponent.

If they cared about safety, they wouldn't play the damn game.

I don't mind the rule, but should have made it the 20 or 15.

"Some rules" I was speaking on the meta level, not just kickoffs.

What came particularly to mind is that I remember it being almost a goal of elite level defenses: Harass the frick out of the QB.

I think Willie Tuitama and Brodie Croyle still wake up in night sweats over Laron Landry.

Congrats kicker, you can’t pin them at the 5 yard line anymore because ANY fair catch there automatically goes to the 25!

When have you ever seen a kicker pin at team at the 5 on a kickoff?

I'm so tired of pussyfying everything. The game shows no resemblance of football in the 80s and 90s. And don't get me started on the NBA!

I just picked a number. But yes, I have seen tackles around the 10 yard line.

Pick any yardage whatsoever behind the 20.

The point remains the same. All that goes away. Just sit back and wave, because you'll typically get further than you would if you tried for it. Which is the exact point of the rule, so I am not sure what you are arguing.

Well you did use an example of something that never happens to push your argument. You make it sound every kickoff is to the 1 and teams struggle to get to the 25.

re: Kickoff Rule Changes Approved
there can still be returns, it's just up to the receiving team.

And it's not being a pussy to understand that brain injuries are a very real and very severe issue. To simply say "MAN UP" and don't make changes to the rules is simply burying your head in the sand.

Football will change (and has made substantial changes over the past few year). And change will continue, as it should.

And this is coming from a lifelong football fan that wants to continue to enjoy the game. But you're a moron if you think the game can remain the same.

"No" resemblance? Really? A slight exageration, don't you think.

We know a hell of a lot more now about brain injury than we did back in the 80s and 90s.

You can bury your head in the sand in the name of manliness, but the rational fans of the game will acknowledge the problems and support efforts to address them.

I did literally nothing of the sort.

All I indicated that with highly talented extra teams, the old rule has a synergistic effect with defenses. There was a REASON to get players down there ASAP, and for your kickers to get you as much time as they could. Now, it doesn't matter how good you are. After a point, the receiving team will just cave and take the free yardage.

quote:

Well you did use an example of something that never happens to push your argument.

Well, I did amend it. And I'm sorry, stops in the 10-15 yard range DO occur. Particularly if you have a talented kicker that gives air time.

Now, that doesn't matter. Even if the kicker is a freak of nature and the receiver is surrounded by defenders when the ball comes down, boop, fair catch, now let me go further down the field.

re: Kickoff Rule Changes Approved
The kickoff is such a blast and another element to the game.

To say its the dumbest part is silly. It's the freaking kickoff. It's exciting. Especially starting off the game.

They basically are about to just start every possession after a score from the 25 or 35 or so soon enough. Seems to be heading that way.

Are you really so distraught about them eliminating the flying wedge 60 years ago to save the sport?

Not the same. Special teams is becoming obsolete and the game is becoming less and less recognizable. Not so much distraught, but more so just sad to see.

This is absurd and does little to promote player safety. All it does is kill a facet of impact for special teams. Congrats kicker, you can’t pin them at the 5 yard line anymore because ANY fair catch there automatically goes to the 25!

Exactly.

I really love this aspect of the game too. Makes it all the more precise.
