re: Kickoff Rule Changes Approved
Much ado about nothing. 99% of return men will bring ball out when it is 1-3 yds deep. Do you think this will change because the ball drops at the 5?

Kickoffs that go through the back of the end zone should result in the ball being placed at the 20. If you claim these rules are about player safety, reward the kicker who just took any threat of an return out of the equation.

I heard some talking heads on radio come up with a great idea.

Get rid of kickoffs all together however after a an extra point, the team retains possession of the ball at their own 30 yard line and it would be 4th and 10. They could punt or go for it...lol.

Reason being punting causes less injuries than kickoffs.

Ideally, I’d like to see 2 broken necks per game on kickoffs.

We should just let all of the players play inside of a giant air bubble so they won't get hit or hurt.

SNL did a skit a few years ago and it is coming true.

LINK

Football is a contact sport and injury is not just possible but probably in most instances. If the player decides to participate then they accept that risk.

The NCAA killed the excitement of college baseball with the dead bats, all in the name of safety, and are doing the same thing in football.

What a shame.

The game doesn't need to be safe. It's perfectly fine unsafe.

re: Kickoff Rule Changes Approved
I didn’t read the rule but does it cover when a player signals fair catch but the gunner decides to lay him out. Will it still be 15 yard penalty.

If so then anything that a player fair catches inside the 10 but gets hammered by the gunner would get brought out and placed less than the 25 yard line....

They won't return it if their coach instructs them not to.

I had not previously known about

instant replay that is not limited to the press box in the stadium. For example, officials involved in the replay process could be located in a conference office.

Naturally, we can just move the instant replay to the fair and unbiased office in Birmingham.

How does this enhance the game? It's regression, IMO.
Why return any kick off when you can just fair catch it? Dumb
A player like Trindon Holliday wouldn't make it big with such a rule. This snuffs the talents of certain players.

This is a bull shite rule change too

quote:

The addition of a 10-second runoff was approved when instant replay overturns the ruling on the field inside of one minute in either half, and the correct ruling would not have stopped the game clock.

So the refs F up and the teams suffer with lost time? What would you rather as a college coach, 4th and 1 on the 45 with 11 seconds or 1st and 10 on the 44 with 1 second? In a tie game, I'm sure the coach of both teams would prefer to let the 3rd down call lie and win whatever time remains based on the result of the 4th down play. I'm sure the Auburn clock manager loves this rule.

you're really missing the point. If a team has a timeout, they can prevent the 10 second runoff. But the rule is meant to not give a team a free timeout because of instant replay stoppage.

It's a good rule.

maybe you haven't read the papers recently - there's this little thing called brain injury, which is severely affecting many ex-players.

Can't bury your head in the sand - gonna have to deal with it at some point, and the NFL and NCAA are doing that now.

It's the right move.

As one poster put it, perhaps there will be more returns as teams get lax on coverage expecting fair catches. That would be an awesome bout of unintended consequences for all of the SJWs and lawyers to gnash their teeth.

News flash: Tackle football is rough. It shouldn’t be played as a youth sport but by the time you get to college you know the deal. If you don’t want to get hurt, don’t play. Go play basketball or baseball or get a free education the hard way by actually earning it with stellar academic performance in high school. And earn a six- or seven-figure income off your education.

FYI if this rule was in effect last year, Troy would not have had time to kick a FG before half last year. End up costing LSU the game (still not an excuse).

The rule makes sense. It would take any team at least 10 seconds to get lined up. They should not get a free time out because of an incorrect call on the field.

How many games have you seen where the ball lands less than 3 yds deep in the end zone and a coach instructs a player to kneel for touchback. 1 out of 100?
