PFF SEC QB grades after 5 week, Minchey barely above Marcel Reed
He's an average QB. Lowest Average Depth of Target in the entire conference at 7.1 yards, means he throws a lot of screens. 28% of his throws are behind the LOS, more than 2/3's of his throws are 9 yards or closer to the LOS. He's only attempted 17 passes over 20 yards this season. Or about 3 a game.
Compare that to Leavitt who has a 9.2 ADOT and only 18% of his throws are behind the LOS and 55% of his throws are within the 9 yards of the LOS. Sam has thrown 23 passes over 20 yards this season, or almost 5 a game.
Sam has 10 big time throws this season, leads the SEC. Kenny has 2 big time throws this season, only ahead of Vandy's backup QB in the graphic you see above and tied with Philo who might be one of the most protected QBs in the conference with the run game he has and not asked to do much (and maybe we see why after the Mizzou game there).
Sam has had only 2 turnover worthy plays this season, Kenny 3. Regardless of what INT stats show, neither is turnover prone in a vacuum. Sam has dealth with 12 drops, Kenny just 4. Sam has a higher adjusted completion percentage than Kenny accounting for receiver drops, despite having a much deeper average target he's throwing to.
Oh by the way this isnt even getting into each QBs rushing which Kenny doesnt really do any of that with 16 total true rushing attempts for 56 yards in 5 games.

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but Minchey is 14 out of 16 in the SP QB rankings for the conference. He is good at not turning the ball over, but not particularly mobile and hasn't demonstrated that he does anything else particularly well, in other words a game manager. I think Kentucky needs more than a game manager against this LSU defense, but I could be wrong.
The Kentucky QB is not what scares me. What worries me is our QB play. I think Leavitt is better than what he has shown, and one way to look at some of his picks thus far is that he has been able to push the envelope with some throws, and hopefully been able to see for himself what he cannot do. At least three of his picks were flukey and not turnover worthy plays, the rest is on him. I trust our QB brainntrust and feel like I should trust Leavitt over Minchey if you are handicapping the QB position alone.

Sam also has 7 interceptions which leads the SEC.
8 touchdowns 7 interceptions is a terrible stat line.

i get it. you were maybe 15 years old and do not remember details.
The injuries mounted on that 2007 team. We dominated every game played fresh...not saying we should have lost to Arkansas in spite of that, though. But, when healthy, that team was the best team in the nation.

Why are yall overhyping every Kentucky player/unit? Minchey isn’t even a top 10 SEC QB. Minchey has yet to show any game breaking ability he’s reliant on the play call being right every play.

Now in 2026, LSU goes up to Lexington to face Kenny Minchey who is the best QB in the SEC so far this season.
Hate to say it. I really do... But Keelon Russell is the best QB in the SEC so far.

2007 and 2026 LSU vs Uk have nothing in common, but the names of the schools involved... and the mascots.

Kentucky also had the best QB in the SEC back in 2007 when LSU played at Lexington. Andre Woodson. For those old enough to remember.
He was good, but there was a guy named Tim Tebow who won the Heisman in 2007. Maybe those old enough to remember him may remember Tim
Kentucky and Woodson fell off pretty good after that LSU win. Kentucky lost 4 of its last 5 games to close out the season before winning their bowl game. Woodson had 3 straight rough games in a row in that stretch against Vandy, State, and UGA

Yeah, I agree Russell looks like the best SEC QB so far this season, but he hasn't faced a really good defense yet either. We will see how good he really is vs UGA.

My how history can be changed with false claims. Best QB in the SEC? Why not put up a natty banner for them!
Tebow won the Heisman in 2007. Matt flynn won a natty. That’s two better than him. That guy was middle of the pack at best.
The team didn’t get any rest because the night before kickoff was march madness and the team hotel was attached to Ruff Arena. Constant noise until 3am.
I know i was there. Someone got relieved of duties after that debacle.

What SEC have you been watching? Minchey is improving like Leavitt but he's nowhere near the top 3 SEC Qbs and maybe even not top 5. He also seems to struggle with pressure schemes which Baker feasts on.

2007 defense was really good all in all
Yea. They were a little banged up by the end of the season. Beckwith and Dorsey had knees, Highsmith had an ankle, Steltz had a shoulder. But they were fierce.
Kinda the bizarro 2019 defense who struggled with some injuries early but got healthy and were elite by the final 4 games.

That 2007 defense was not great.
Looking back, DBs were pretty avg, at least not NFL talents. Lb avg. Dline above average
Who from that defense went on to play a while in the NFL besides Tyson Jackson?
