Quite frankly, we should not be surprised that something like this happened given who the current AD is. He should never have been hired. I would also like to mention that what a lame duck absentee governor (Bobby Jindal) should have never had any bearing on the decision that the board was to make.

The only thing that this debacle truly confirmed for me is that as incompetent as Miles seems to be with regard to developing a good offense, this administration is woefully more incompetent with how they "handled" this mess.

UGA did it right. They kept their mouths shut, and all their shite in-house until it was actually done -- and you didn't see the media circus around Richt the last few months of the season.

Do I think Miles is still the guy for the job? No. However, I have even less faith now in Alleva being able to handle the coaching search LSU deserves should he show Miles the door next year (which he probably will, because unless we win the West, Miles is the definition of a lame duck coach now).

Hopefully they learned a valuable lesson.

I get what you are saying.. However, without sounding like I am hammering you... I am speechless that the board members, Aleva and Alexander had not already learned that lesson!

Makes me wonder what other "lessons" they have yet to learn...

Good Grief...

don't think Alleva should be tied to Miles because it was obvious that his decision was to not retain Miles.

Not necessarily, he too seemed to be at a crossroads.

Just read the emails, they had not collectively agreed on letting Miles go. That's the first problem. Zero cohesion, zero plan.

This should trouble every single LSU fan. Doesn't matter what side if the fence you are on.

It's clear the braintrust at LSU was completely brainless. They had zero understanding of media and social media and the need to keep the circle tight. You don't send emails to every single board member discussing this cap openly and expect it not to leak.

Without a doubt, our stellar recruiting season was killed by the actions of LSU's leadership, and Miles has been legitimately hindered from doing his job to the best of his ability.

uh what? so far LSU lost a QB many have stated was going to leave anyway. LSUs recruiting is fine.

What would make anyone think that LSU and Jimbo were at anytime in "negotiations"???

Those were my exact thoughts after reading the emails. No mention of a new coach candidate or any real process begun to search for a new one. This seems to be a case of where social media went out of control and the board including Alexander and Alleva were reacting to a lot of conjecture and sensationalism in the press.

Sorry folks, but your boyfriend, Jimbo was never mentioned....anywhere in all of this.

Those emails don't detail everything about the "search". They do give a little insight, but that's probably about 20% of what was actually going on. These guys talked in person and on the phone to each other. As pointed out in one of Alleva's emails, "I told you that in our phone conversation". There was a definite plan, but that plan was not followed through completion as some got cold feet after facing a little media criticism nationally from people who have no interest in the future success of LSU's program.

I get why people want Miles gone, but here is a good reason not to. And it's something I've said for years now.

I mean wtf? These clowns should have had this thought out years ago. What happens if Les left in 07? You have no plan or process on what to do when the time to replace a coach does come.

The lesson learned here is how rapid and vicious the 24 hour news cycle and the social media impact is on matters like this. We can learn from this and be better prepared in future. I will say , that most of the feedback I have received from fans sounds like this " it was probably the right decision to keep Les - but I sure hope he was given the message that the program has problems that need addressing This my friends was one of the most fluid, complex, confusing situations I have ever seen [sic].

I think what you saw was an example of a group of older people (like myself) who were not really keenly aware of the ramifications of the social media/24 hour news cycle (particularly related to sports now) in today world vs the last time they did this in football (2004/5 for miles but really not since 99/2000 to fire then replace a coach). If there is good new out of all this, it is that they will have a less public process in place.

I'm supportive of the decision they made but would also have been supportive of a new coach but would not have been happy about it unless it was an ace candidate. But even if they had made what I thought was a bad hire, I would have hoped I was wrong and prayed for success.

I always pull for LSU to win.

I didn't agree with the decision not to retain Miles, but once that decision was made, it should have been executed 100%. The absolute worst thing you can do as a leader is vacillate on a key, controversial change.

This is pretty spot on. We are facilitating our own demise.

The only way to fix it is to come out and say Miles can play out his contract

And let him keep doing the same crap over and over? No way! His arse needs to be on a short leash next year. No SECCG appearance and it should be see you later, Les.

I would not worry too much about recruiting. LSU will never have a problem attracting the top talent in LA that want to play for whoever is coaching LSU.

It may hurt out of state but again there are enough players in a state like TX that LSU can make inroads there easily especially with a game a year in that state.

And this could be a reason why younger people are hired in upper level business. Gone are the days that an old retired coach is named an AD.

with the poor leadership from the governor, ie the selling of appointments to the board. we did not have the unity on the board, doing the best for LSU

Oh I agree. It's amazing they had to learn a lesson this go around and it wasn't something that already had a formal process. Pathetic really and I worry it's gonna be costly. Maybe I'm being negative here, but I can't help but think recruiting is gonna take a toll since Miles is seemingly on a year to year basis. What a cluster frick.

Now this is a post that raises the bar significantly on the Rant. Amazing job, dude.

I have to chime in on the last e-mail from Rolfe McCollister, Jr - Rolfe Sr. served with my old man in WWII and who was my was my family's go-to legal advisor (with McCleary as our actual atty) throughout the '90s. I have the utmost respect for that family, and while I don't know Rolfe Jr. personally, his Dad was good as gold to us.

The apple don't fall far, and that holds true pretty damn often. I liked that Rolfe Jr. commented about King and his "silence" regarding a new provost, but an all-out cacophony about a coaching change. Rolfe Jr. said "it speaks volumes"

Funny story about Rolfe Sr. - was at his office with my Dad back in 1995, and he told me to come see him the following Monday (January 16). I agreed, then turned and said something like, "Wait, Mr. Rolfe..isn't Monday a holiday?"

He looked at my Dad and they both burst out laughing. "No, son, we will be open, I promise."

Dad had to explain it to me in the car.
