Read a Sports Illustrated article about Kellys 12 years at ND. Said overall good job but couldn't get the winning culture. They have that now with Marcus Freeman.

I don't feel that winning vibe, swagger and bring the wood attitude I always had.

I’m no ND fan but the minimization of the job Freeman has done this year by many on this board comes across as just disingenuous pettiness.

CBK’s best year at ND was his 3rd yr when he was in the NC game(12’); Freeman is in his 3rd year also.

Compare ‘12 and ‘24 ND stats and it’s clear Freeman’s team this year is outperforming arguably CBK’s best ND team:

- offense yds per rush attempt: ‘24 2nd ‘12 38th
- offense yds per pass attempt: ‘24 19th ‘12 71st
- Pts per game: ‘24 3rd ‘12 54th
- yds allowed per rush attempt: ‘24 20th. ‘12 11th
- yds allowed per pass attempt: ‘24 3rd. ‘12 25th
- Pts allowed per game: ‘24 2nd. ‘12 7th

Give Freeman the credit he deserves.

It does when you get a kid like Riley Leonard - he’s very smart and would have no problem getting in. Now you can poach Northwestern, Duke, etc who have your standards also but kids rather play at ND, especially if they winning.

Freeman is a good coach but he is benefitting from where BK left the program plus some changes the board at ND made to make it easier to get certain types of players to be admitted to Notre Dame as a result of BK leaving.

All of this. Kelly has issues, no doubt, but Freeman took over a well managed, top ten program. Notre Dame was a dumpster fire when Kelly arrived and he doesn't get enough credit for rebuilding that program. They'd been basically a .500 program for the previous 15 years or so until Kelly arrived. He deserves a ton of credit for building a contender in spite of their academic standards and the pressure that comes with that job.

Freeman and ND have lost to Marshall and NIU under his coaching. If LSU and BK lost to either, they would be clowned for years even if they won a title.

Notre Dame will still be the team that skips into the playoffs and gets beat by a better team. Nothing different than the last decade.

Um...he beat two ranked sec teams this year...bk beat 1.

Hes got 9 straight wins vs ranked opponents, kelly beat like 9 in 12 years.

He has more top ten wins in three years than kelly in twelve

Ive been thinking about ND and Freeman and wondering would Kelly have them in the playoffs muchless the round of 4?
Kelly did great work at ND but never able to win the big games and get into title talk with easy schedules.

Im not sure they would be in the playoffs if Kelly had stayed. Hopefully he can do it here. But after 3 yrs ND is in the playoffs and LSU is midpack SEC. He had more roster issues to deal with for sure but his DC hire and OC hires have been poor.

I’m not the biggest Kelly fan but this thought process is ridiculous. If Freeman wins it all then he can rightfully proclaim he elevated the program but only then

These are facts.

In 3 years:

Freeman has won 2 playoff games. Kelly 0.

Freeman beat the SEC champ in a bowl game. Kelly 0.

Freeman won ND’s first major bowl game in 30 years. ND was a laughingstock in major bowls during that period, and Kelly was their coach for over 1/3rd of that period!

So yes Freeman has elevated ND past Kelly had it. LSU fans are being petty and obtuse.

We need to STFU and worry about why our own program is flailing still after three years and whether we need to start thinking of an exit plan very soon as to our coach.

A little thought for those that think playoff wins matter as much as they did:
Freeman has them in the final four after winning two games. It gets harder from this point onward. Kelly got them in the final four twice but nobody cares about that because they had zero playoff wins.
Freeman has them exactly where BK had them, but some think he's better because he has playoff wins. In actuality, they're in the exact same spot and I expect Penn State to end their season.

Then what’s BK’s excuse ?

The same reason? Duh

NIL+Portal reduced the concentration of talent at schools like LSU, Bama, UGA and redistributed it to rich schools like ND... hell look at SMU and Vanderbilt.

I disagree. I used to get great pleasure out of making fun of Notre Dame for not being able to win a major bowl game or not beating an elite program in a big game. ND consistently got their doors blown off in big games against elite programs. Kelly was notorious for that and I don’t think anybody here should deny it. In fact, he left and blamed Notre Dame as the reason (shocking, I know, that he made excuses for that as well).

ND just beat UGA by 2 scores in the Sugar. So no, Freeman does not have them “exactly where BK had them.” Freeman has already gotten that monkey off their back.

I wish we had an ND Board where all the posters who let ND live in their heads could post to their hearts' content. I am sick of reading about ND here.

He does deserve credit.

The issue is that people are acting like Kelly didn’t do well at Notre Dame.

Also, people are acting like Notre Dame has had a brutal schedule this year.

I laid out how Freeman (while doing a great job) has sure as shite had the “Luck of the Irish.”

FWIW, I really like Freeman.

However, I also like Kelly at LSU.

I support Kelly, but the reality is that this was going to happen. He was never a media darling and leaving ND put him in the crosshairs of the NE media.

Freeman is a good coach and he relates to his players. He also walked into a stable program that was already set up to be successful. Kelly took over a program in need of a roster and culture rebuild. Pretty much the opposite of running away.

Freeman has and will do very well at ND. Kelly can do the same at LSU. He knows the expectations going into year 4 are going to be extremely high.
