I'm sure that Mike, given the opportunity, would prefer his habitat at Louisiana State University, than being a free large cat in the wild. Mike is a slave. Parade him thru the stadium.

Landry is a useful idiot for PETA. You can’t buy live tigers in Walmart. PETA has been closing the very few sources. LSU has a loophole to keep them open:sanctuary status. Kiss any future tiger at LSU goodbye if LSU starts violating .

This is why you don’t elect a USL fan to run LSU. A grandstanding politician that divides us even when confronted with his lies.

I love how some reporters say that it’s bad for Tigers to bring them into the stadium and then suddenly the majority of the rant appears to emphatically parrot the story as if they’re experts on Tigers themselves.

All I know is that I never saw a story or witnessed any sign of one of our tiger mascots suffering ill effects from going into the stadium. Not once. They all weathered it just fine.

He needs to drop the bullshite about the tiger and the anthem and pass a law that's really needed: No Day Games in September!

If there is even a decent possibility of causing undue and unneeded stress on the mascot that we love, why risk that just for a bit of amusement?

"Responsible care for live exotic animals has evolved throughout the years, and LSU has evolved with it, as evidenced by the renovations to the tiger habitat in 1981 and the construction of an entirely new habitat in 2004-05. In that vein, LSU has decided that the tiger will not go into Tiger Stadium on home football game days. He will be out in his yard seven days a week. By having Mike in his yard on game days, it ensures that fans are able to see him throughout the day.

As further evidence of LSU’s dedication to providing the best, most responsible care for tigers, LSU is working to have the tiger habitat accredited as a tiger sanctuary. Becoming an accredited sanctuary means that LSU has met high standards of excellence in animal care and is operating ethically and responsibly. LSU believes that these changes are in the best interest of the longevity and ethical management of the LSU tiger mascot program.

Mikes IV, V and VI were all donated to LSU from rescue facilities. LSU has not purchased a tiger since Mike III in 1956, and LSU does not support the for-profit breeding of tigers. By becoming an accredited sanctuary, LSU is demonstrating its commitment to worldwide tiger conservation and hopes to raise awareness about the dwindling live tiger population and the plight of tigers kept illegally and/or inappropriately in captivity in the U.S.

The tiger habitat and LSU’s animal care plan are licensed by the USDA. The facility, tiger and animal care program are inspected annually to ensure that the facility and the program are in compliance with the Federal Animal Welfare Act and other USDA policies and guidelines."

Article from 2017 regarding the search for the new Mike. So yeah, there is an actual law, and actual government agency that oversees Mike and all animals in zoos, circuses, etc.

People that have wild animals as pets are fricking nut jobs who want to stroke their own ego by "controlling" wild animals. LSU is not going backwards to no longer promote ethical care and animal welfare for the Mikes by forcing him into a cage and parading him around a stadium for an hour when it's hardly even noticeable. How many people go to games nowadays and say "damn I wish that truck with the cheerleaders on top of the cage still drove around the stadium at 1mph"

Allowed” by who? I keep seeing this narrative, that LSU had to make concessions and promises to some mysterious power that has the authority to tell state universities to do with their mascots- I just don’t believe that’s true… yes there is some agency(???) that offers accreditation to “wildlife sanctuaries” but they have no over-arching authority- there are over 10,000 tigers in private captivity in the US; there’s no one agency that tells the owners what they must do-

You for real?

We do this to dogs, cats, horses, cows, and all other types of animals. You probably do it to your dog.

And once again:

Mike I 20 yrs
Mike II 2 yrs
Mike III 18 yrs
Mike IV 14 yrs
Mike V 17 yrs
Mike VI 9 yrs
Mike VII 7 + yrs

It doesn't seem like bringing him out to the crowd matters in any way.
Mike II was a fluke and Mike VI barely ever went out. VII never has.
A Bengal tiger has an average lifespan of 8 to 10 years in the wild

The governor recalled his days on campus, when Mike VI was the on-campus mascot, and how he'd like to return to the days when Mike could intimidate opposing teams.

This not a direct quote and likely summarized by the article writer. Jeff did not say "I remember when I was at school here"...

This what people wanted in office. He's a better representation of a large subset of the population in Louisiana in how they think. That's why a lot of people are leaving the state -- due to leaders like this.

You mean to tell me that a Tiger that doesn’t have to fight for food or survival lives longer than one that does?
