I get that coaches have a lot going on, but this was flatly mishandled.

The process seems simple: LSU's administrative staff schedules a Zoom call between Coach Kiffin, Jayden, and Pickett. Kiffin and Pickett take the call from Kiffin's office. On the call, Pickett expresses his sincerely admiration for Jayden and respectfully asks Jayden if Pickett can wear #5, both to honor Pickett's high school and to honor Jayden. Kiffin and Pickett both acknowledge to Jayden that they could not fathom any LSU offensive player attempting to wear #5.

Jayden most likely says "yes" and ESPN gets to tell that story during the Clemons broadcast. If he says "no" then Pickett wears #3 but sees that Kiffin tried to make it happen

Why the hell does LSU football employ so many people if they can't get something like this right?

My thing is that this is an entirely different football administration. Daniels and Kelly agreed to that or was sold that dream. That’s gone now and Lane and his administration is here. How is that LSUs fault.

Well, that's a good way to get rid of your hero status down here.

Are we really supposed to give a shite what Jayden wants? He didn’t win any championships for us.

(Unless you include an SEC West championship)

They did discuss it with him. This is honestly BK’s fault. Kelly didn’t even know picket was promised 5, when he found out, he told JD5 and was told he wasn’t on board. So he never let Pickett get 5 last year. Lane has no personal connections with JD probably and just wants to honor a current player what was promised to him. Obviously it seems like that was a big deal to Pickett too

This. It also could be possible considering how early Pickett was recruited that 5 was something promised to him very early on. Obviously holds some meaning for him. Jayden then goes on and haves an incredible year and thus BK and company don’t want to give that number out again. BK gets canned and Lane finds out the situation not really knowing JD5 personally like BK does, so maybe Lane didn’t really think it would be a big deal giving it to Pickett since it was already promised, and he is an elite player. Like I said in my original response, I think 5 ultimately does get retired.

I get it, Jayden is one of the best players we've been fortunate to have. But at the same time, I don't really get the point of retiring numbers in college. Theres simply wayyyy too many players that will play. It's not like the professionals, where you retire a guy who played 10+ years for the organization. We're talking about someone who played only 2 years. It doesn't make sense.

LSU should be thanking Jayden more than Jayden should be thanking LSU

Even then he should tell his posse to chill out about it and call up Lane and discuss it or something. This looks so dumb for him.

I’d be surprised if JD5 had much to do with this. His mom is a handful and is his agent/business manager.

Either way, ridiculous. You don’t own #5 forever at LSU because of 1 spectacular season.

Permanently torching the relationship with the school that gave him the platform for the Heisman over someone else wearing his number is certainly a choice.

I don't see how this has any kind of standing unless there's a written contract saying LSU wouldn't let anyone else use it. This will get tossed with the quickness. Even if BK verbally told him some nonsense.

It’s entirely selfish. It’s a number for god sakes. It will be retired as well as number 9. And people can still wear it. If it wasn’t promised then it wouldn’t be an issue. Promises are promises. The current and future is more important than the past. Why does someone wearing a number that you wore diminish your legacy? Very short sighted.
