I don’t know if Jay is the best or not. Is he among some of the best - yes. What people are really upset about is the peaks (or cliffs) and valleys of program performance. LSU fans, like fans of most higher end historical programs, want to at least be competitive and in the hunt year to year.

This year’s team does not meet that expectation.

No he didn't. That was 2016. Arizona was 0-2 in Omaha in 2021.

It's neither the worst SEC finish in LSU history nor the worst regular-season finish in LSU history.

It is the worst SEC finish since they went to the 30-game format.

So just the worst in the past 30 years and still something that has never been done before

No. I’m saying that when evaluating a short run, like CJJ’s at LSU, you should look at the impact of luck. CJJ has had way more than his share of good luck.

Sure, but he’s also had to deal with things too. In 2023, Grant Taylor, Chase Shores, and Garrett Edwards all got hurt. Pretty unlucky no?

He has not been robbed of anything important, and he was gifted a second and third chance in Omaha by the two defensive plays I mentioned.

How do you determine if a great defensive play is just a great defensive play or if it’s a “gift”? Is it that once the play goes over a 7/10 on the difficulty scale, it becomes a “gift”?
quote:

That is why, before this year - and this is strictly for evaluating the coach - I credited CJJ with one and half championships, not two.

That’s weird
quote:

So I wasn’t to the point that I thought CJJ was the greatest coach in the game. I thought of him as one of the top 5 or so. And I still do.

I don’t have a problem with this.

Penny, if you micro-analyze any championship run like this, you will find the same good fortune. And that is any sport.

If any season would make you appreciate the mundane and routine, it should be this one. You take for granted how good teams treat routine plays. You didn’t see any fly balls bounce off of the player’s head on those Jay Johnson championship teams, did you? Insane talented but took care of the routine things.

Honestly this is why Mainieri’s teams were so consistent. But was at the mercy of a few tough breaks on several occasions. That’s baseball.

…. He was the coach in 2016.. he literally said he coached in the championship series before he was hired which is true. Reading comprehension learn it.

Sure, if you need something to piss and moan about. But just be honest about it.

Not you, the person I originally replied to in the post you replied to. I pointed out that this is the worst conference finish in the 30-game SEC era, not the worst ever. There are several worse SEC seasons, but they all predate Skip.

It's in my nature to be pedantic, so those details sometimes drive me to post corrections. It's also why I thank people for pointing out when I post mistaken details or stats. It's kind of a curse

Only if it is an excess of what most coaches normally deal with. So no, I don't think it was bad luck. Any one of them is bad luck, but if you look at what injuries you expect to get in a year, then that sounds about like average luck.

Those two plays were season ending moments that were prevented by one remarkable play and one jaw-dropping one.

It kinda felt like this year’s team never really jelled. It’s going to be a common flaw moving forward in college sports with NIL. Go pay for last year’s hot talent in hopes of raw brutal talent overcoming homegrown chemistry of smaller less affluent schools. I think most schools will see these random like seasons if we all focus on portal style roster building every year.

You think on average teams lose two 2nd round draft pick pitchers per year?

I still don’t understand what you are getting at. So whether a play is considered a “great play” or a “gift” just depends on when it happens during the game?

My suggestion to folks who are "just asking" when JJ is gonna get on the hot seat and under what circumstances is this. Who could LSU get as HC in 2027 or 2028 who will win 2 more NC's for us? I do not see one coach out there in baseball who could guarantee winning 2 NC's in his first 4 seasons. NOT ONE. I'll stick with JJ even if we do NOT make the CWS in the next 4 seasons.
GeorgeWest.......The classic stereotype of a Mediocrity Accepting Louisianan with low standards of excellence for LSU and all LSU Sports. Just wave the P&G Pom Poms and accept whatever happens without exception.
