CJJ took over the best program in college baseball and has delivered two titles in 5 years.
No. No he didn't. He took over a program on a 5 year decline.

The 2023 title would have gone the other way if not for two remarkable defensive plays.
This is stupid.

The 2023 year wouldn't have had to be in close games if Chase Shores, Garrett Edwards, and Grant Taylor all weren't lost for the season by the end of March.

But he’s not competitive every year.
This is the first non competitive year. Every one of the top coaches in America has had a similar season to this.

My .02: I think the Omaha run last year effed up our final evals when they moved the portal window. I also think JJ was short on cash. Those two things are all it took. Got priced out of a few top-tier dudes, and missed on a few of who was left over.

Agree on all this. Additionally injuries played a role for sure.

I don’t think Jay is a poor evaluator of talent, so for him to miss on all of them is an anomaly. Pretty incredible actually.

Sure we understand, and it's because of BAD player evaluation and selection in the portal. It's an obvious choice... either it's bad players OR it's bad coaching.

Is he? We haven't seen him do anything without 3 of the best pitchers in school history, two of whom were one-year rentals developed at other schools.

Yep. Jake and the pitchers for sure.

I think that's where the money issue weighs heavy. Those teir-2 guys are tier 2 for a reason. Higher risk, and this time we got bit. JJ didn't forget how to spot talent overnight.

He got lucky. This is the worst baseball team in 30 years. He has next year to fix it then the heat will be more than turned up

The 2024 team was likely one game away from missing the NCAAT. They got a great draw for the regional and got to play Wofford twice (we never even faced Cowan). But that team only got into the tournament by the skin of their teeth.

This is so stupid and intellectually dishonest. That team was also one game away from hosting a super regional that they would have been favored in. There weren’t too many teams with better #1 and #2 starters than we had at the end of that year with Jump and Holman. Our chances were very good to get to Omaha and win a game or 2 if we had won that final game in the regionals.

We can go back and forth on this all offseason. I’m not going to engage with you, though, because you have an agenda. And you’re kinda dumb. And an intellectually dishonest a-hole.

CJJ took over the best program in college basebal

No he didn’t. We were behind Florida, Arkansas, and Vandy just in the SEC. Hell, South Carolina had won 2 NCs since we’d won our last. Some of you are either just stupid, have an anti-Jay bias, or are intellectually dishonest assholes. Probably a combo of all 3. This is 2026, not 1996. If you don’t know what that means, then you should probably stay out of college baseball discussions as you are not well enough armed to engage without embarrassing yourself.

One thing for sure is there are horrible pitchers on this team. It’s uncanny how awful they are, can’t find the strke zone most of the season.

You very succinctly summed up what a lot people on this board either don’t understand or are refusing to acknowledge.

I know. Do you know Michigan's head coach who coached in a championship? I bet you the majority of this board doesn't.

True. But that year we were resurrected from the dead twice - once by Pearson and once by Tre. They did it, and they deserved to win, but from CJJ’s perspective we got very lucky that year. And for luck to balance out we’d have to lose a championship over some unfortunate plays. That hasn’t happened - yet.

Ok... So you're saying LSU might lose in Omaha in the near future? I'm not sure what you're getting at

Okay. I'll bite. If he's a top 5 coach who's the other 4 you have ahead of him in college baseball?

No. I’m saying that when evaluating a short run, like CJJ’s at LSU, you should look at the impact of luck. CJJ has had way more than his share of good luck. He has not been robbed of anything important, and he was gifted a second and third chance in Omaha by the two defensive plays I mentioned.

That is why, before this year - and this is strictly for evaluating the coach - I credited CJJ with one and half championships, not two. So I wasn’t to the point that I thought CJJ was the greatest coach in the game. I thought of him as one of the top 5 or so. And I still do.
