You got me. Shaq sucks. He should have won 3 national championships as a 17 year old true freshman - the only year that he had 2 other teammates capable of playing in the NBA. Alcindor was able to overcome only having 5-6 such teammates and the greatest coach in the history of college basketball.

I exaggerated the heights of those guys on purpose, but shaq would have stuffed each of them AND the basketball in the goal.

areem) Vote Next Round Shaq weighed 286lbs as an incoming Freshman and was listed at 294lbs the summer before his final season at LSU. He was never close as small as 270 while Wilt at his biggest listing in the NBA was 275lbs and was consistently dominated by 6-8, 6-9 Bill Russell, (would’ve never happened to Shaq.) Once the lane was widened Wilts production was almost cut in half, scoring above 25ppg just once after 65-66, so much for the more gifted theory. Shaq would outclass Wilt in every way, Wilt was a poor mans Shaq.
so the most dominant player in NBA history is not better than Shaq? He didn’t have all those HOF players like Russell.
Second if you think “Russell dominated him” that’s a joke. Go look at the stats.
You have no eye test. You have only your little WIKi. Wilt would have been relentless blocking Shaq’s arse and fouled out.
Again, I watched both and it isn’t close.

Go look at a career.
Wilt dominated the NBA. And for the Record Mad Max “dominated Jordan”, but you look at a single game where the Celtics has collected the greatest group of players J had ever seen for that long of a time.
Russell was older than Wilt then.

Look at Shaq getting his arse handed to him by Hakeem Olajuwon in the finals. Shaq said it himself.
It happens.

If you are going to miss the point of the thread and indeed Bilas' point, I shouldn't have bothered with you.

Again Sir:

PPG:
Alcindor 26.4
O'Neal 21.6

Total Rebounds:
Alcindor 15.5
O'Neal 13.5

National Championships:
Alcindor 3
O'Neal 0

In the words of Isiah Thomas; "If they say the numbers don't lie, then Kareem is the greatest ever to play the game."

The only player comparable to Shaq is Wilt but Shaq didn’t let a 6-8 guy dominate him every year the way Wilt did, it just wouldn’t happen.

Wilt averaged 28 and 28 against that 6'8" guy. Hardly dominating.

You know what else is funny is idiots say they “followed Shaq yet most of them weren’t born when he played in college. What is especially memorable is how Hakeem at his 6’10 skinny self DOMINATED Shaq in that 94-95 finals. What’s funny are the stats. They look “ok” but even Shaq himself said it on many occasions how he was dominated.
As I said, it happens.

Lmfao wiki? Lol another phony accusation but it’s nice to know you’re one of those people who hates facts. And no you didn’t watch both cause if you did you’d know better. If you think Wilt, who average 22.1ppg after the lane was widened to modern standards could dominate Shaq you’re absolutely clueless when it comes to understanding basketball.

50. Or how about when he got a little older 7.8 assists / game? Go look that stat and stick it up your arse. Not Michael. Not Kobe. Not that fake as LeBron. Not Shaq. Not Russell. Not anybody in the history of the league came close.
NOBODY.
Lane my arse BS. GTFO with that bullshite.
So give me Phi Slamma Jamma Akeem Olajuwon then.
Here is what Shaq said HIMSELF
Shaq on NBAs all time starting 5
But hey, y’all know.

Nice to see you’re also a hypocrite by saying Wilt wasn’t dominated despite losing to Russell all but once over their entire careers while simultaneously claiming that Hakeem dominated Shaq despite Shaq 28ppg 12.5rebs and 6.3 assists in that series. As usual your takes are ignorant.

Zion beat Laettner in that dumbass vote, by a wide margin. That should tell you all you need to know about it’s validity.

Pretty sure I was about your age watching Wilt.
I gave the stats. There is no argument. I said Wilt was young when he played Russell and had that bad game in the finals.
I likened that to Shaq being in the league for 3 years and Dream took him to the wood shed. It happens.
My eyes watched the games we are talking about and if you just look at the stats or some old YouTube videos, you can’t possibly see the whole story. I watched Pete when I was in school AT THE SAME TIME WITH as him.
For example, if you watched that ‘94-95 finals it seems like Shaq was destroyed, but his stats are decent. Stats in any particular series and game can and do happened.
It happened to a great Michael Jordan against Vernon Maxwell and Joe Dumars.

It happens.

I LOVE Shaq. Met him on several occasions through the Alumni association and other events. He is one of the most genuine and kind people you will ever meet.
This is not about Shaq only.
Yes Shaq is clearly better than Alcindor. But with my own eyes and watching both Shaq and Wilt) of their entire careers, the only thing Shaq got on him was the number of championships. Wilt AVERAGED 50 for a season and was like Shaq circa 1999 with running and in shape. He never got fat and only got better except at the FT line.

If you want to look at series, think about Shaq vs Dream as Wilt vs Russell. They were both young guys playing seasoned veterans in the series everyone points to when discussing Wilt.

Wilt lead the NBA in assists...
Scoring 7 times - 50 once and scored 100 in a game. Just ridiculous.
Rebounding 11 out of his 14 seasons.
He was an elite passer - led the season in assists one season
And he could fly. Many have stated he ran. 4.6 40 yd dash.

No he’s said he ran a 4.6 just like he said he had a 48 inch vertical and neither were true. And no you weren’t my age watching Wilt you’d be dead a long time if you were and you didn’t watch Wilt unless you were attending games live and you weren’t. You’ve seen Wilt as much as I have from film only I know what I’m looking at and understand context. You keep running from the fact that rules were much different when his numbers spiked or that he was the only 7 footer in the league while being allowed to stand under the basket at will. You’re also dishonest about him being far from old when the rules were changed and far from young all the times he squared off against Russell. If you had watched him you’d know this “your own eyes would’ve seen it.” And no it didn’t seem like Shaq was destroyed in the 95 finals because he wasn’t individually plus his team held double digit leads late in most of those games. But again you either didn’t watch or didn’t understand what you were watching. You prefer Wilt fine, you can express that and discuss it without being a douche bag when you run into contrary facts.

I am 59 years old and honestly believe Kareem should be in the greatest ever discussion with MJ. Shaq is my favorite athlete.
Thing is, not a lot of 59 year olds are voting and Shaq is everywhere. Everybody likes Shaq. If Shaq wins this whole thing it shows that being great at basketball and life is the real winner.

How the hell can you argue with the man himself. I posted a link to this because if you are arguing this, YOU didn’t watch that series. Shaq scores when Dream was out the game and Dream took him to the wood shed to the tune of being the finals MVP. That isn’t even an argument. You JUST LOOKED AT STATS. I saw it LIVE at the freaking Summit. And yes, I’m a Rockets fan. As such, Hakeem wasn’t dominant as Shaq for a career. I’ve never said that. I made a series comparison like some do for Russell and Wilt. That’s it.

Wilt was 3 years younger on a less talented team going against the best team in NBA history as far as dynasties. Then you don’t call 28 pts and 18 rbs AND left off assists and blocks vs Russell as not dominating? He is arguably 1 or 2 greatest ever. That’s not my list. That’s historians of the game.
People act like guys then couldn’t play. That’s an insult to people like Bob Pettit.

And I did see Wilt MANY MANY times. I was 19 in 1968 when I started LSU after one year of Juco baseball. My brother died in Vietnam otherwise, I would have been there myself.

Because it’s a popularity contest and not an actual vote on who’s the greatest college basketball player of all time.

exactly. Made up of people that never saw him do the things he did NOT on videos on YouTube. My eyes saw it live as a student. I’d never seen anything like him before or since. Not with his size and skill set. I’m 6’2.5” (well was ) and he was definitely a legitimate 6’5”. When at his games, at least at times for me, I didn’t even care about the score, I would just be in awe of what he could do.
