Look I’m pretty impartial re: Ed O but you have to laugh at the optics of Coach O publicly proclaiming Pellini’s D would be an upgrade from Aranda, watching LSU’s D implode under Pellini, and Ed O turning around to hire a protege of Aranda.

Not a great look. Optics aside, hope he’s a hell of a good coach.

Very high bar you've set here.

Not exactly the most exciting hire, but anyone would be better than Bo.

And I don't consider being under Aranda's coaching tree as a very solid qualifier. To me, he was more name and reputation than success at LSU.

But, if you know Aranda and Joe Brady, YOU'RE HIRED!

I am optimistic, now let's see how the rest of the staff fills out. We have to improve our Linebacker play immediately! The LBs have to learn the proper line of attack to the football and learn to tackle. Just watch Devin White, textbook on what we need!!

Prior to the NFL, Jones served as defensive backs coach at the University of Wisconsin in 2015, as the Badgers led the nation with just seven passing touchdowns allowed. Wisconsin's passing defense ranked second in the Big Ten and seventh nationally, allowing 173.2 pass yards per game. From 2012-14, Jones served as the secondary coach at the University of Hawaii, adding the title of assistant head coach in 2014. Jones helped improve Hawaii's passing defense by 62.1 yards per game, as the Rainbow Warriors went from 85th nationally in 2011 to the 11th-best passing defense in 2012.

I was hoping the hire would inspire greater confidence than "can't be worse than Pelini."

There's a whole hell of a lot of real estate between Pelini and where we need to be on defense. This guy needs to be vastly better than Pelini if O plans on sticking around.

Top notch hire

Yes, I was really hoping to have a coaching staff that has zero members that have ever been a coordinator.

Recipe for success.

We could get lucky and have both of these guys do very well, but when your mantra is that we will hire the best coordinators in the country- it might be assumed that they would actually have a record of being a successful COORDINATOR...somewhere.

His last four seasons have been spent coaching bottom 10 nfl passing defenses.

In 2019, his defense was 7th in the NFL in NY/Att and also had 17 INTs which ranked 3rd in the NFL. In 2018, they ranked 3rd in NY/Att, and in 2017 they were 2nd.

They weren't great this year. But I'm not sure where you're getting "bottom 10 pass defense his last 4 seasons" from when it's quite the opposite.

I'm reserving judgment until I see what he can do with an entire defense and not just a secondary, but let's at least be honest with what he's actually done in his role in the NFL.

The fact that everyone is so upset about this hire is the thing that makes me think it will probably work out really well

Sorry, it was not his defense. He was not the DC.

Why didn't they just promote Raymond? At least he has the low down on the program.

A HC who's never been a Coordinator, and a DC who's getting on the job training in the SEC West. This whole situation has been an exercise in futility.

Is this real or another case of O jumping the gun and announcing before even seeing if this guys contract allows him to leave?

You realize he was with the Bengals in 2019 right? Not the Vikings? He was only with the Vikings this season.

Dolphins 2017, Bengals 2018-19, and Vikings this year.

Maybe he was in a similar predicament with the Vikings as Raymond was last year with Pelini which made him look bad as a DB coach.

I also hope Raymond is not disgusted about this hire considering the rumors of him wanting a DC position.

Well considering Zimmer has had elite defenses every year but this one...probably not the case.

Smart guy, worked under great defensive coaches, Louisiana ties, called a good defense in D2.

It’s risky but he could be great. Let’s give him our support.
