Mind blowing that back in the sixties, a 40 yard FG was an adventure for an NFL kicker. When Jan Stenerud started making the occasional 50, he was viewed as Superman.

The EA Sports sim has us winning 38-13 so I'll say no because the sim is always right. Right?

It is crazy, high school kids easily kick it 60 now. I wonder what percentage of the increase is due to the equipment.

I know, longest kick in any game. Really only need the wind though. Janikowsi kicked an 80 yarder in high school. My son kicked a 72 when film crew came to interview him for kicking 61 in a game. But those long ones are mostly a parlor trick in wind like that.

We opened with A&M every season between 1986-89 and 1992-95. They were ranked each of those seasons, mostly in the Top Ten!
In 1990 we played a Top Ten Aggie team at home 4th game (17-8 LSU victory); in 1991 we opened up with TWO Top Ten teams on the road (@ Georgia and @ Aggies, both huge losses in Curley's debut games); in 1989 opened @ Aggies (Top Ten, 16-28 loss) and vs Florida State (Top Ten, 21-31 loss).

This is a wild question. It could be (probably is) the toughest opener in recent memory, but good lord. This isn't even the hardest game LSU has ever played against Clemson

you're right, i kinda meandered. wouldn't be the first time.

A simple downvote was enough. But no, you had to go full a-hole.

I looked back and found all the opening games against top 10 ranked teams since the beginning of the Paul Deitzel era. There are ten of them. Two under Charlie Mac(0-1-1), one under Jerry Stoval(L), one under Bill Arnsparger (W), two under Curley Hallman (0-2). one under Gerry DiNardo (L), one under Les Miles (W), one under Ed Orgeron (W), and one under Brian Kelly(L). Time will tell, but on paper, these are in consideration for the toughest opening games LSU has played. #1 Nebraska in 1976 being the logical choice.
1975 @ #6 Nebraska L 10-7
1976 vs #1 Nebraska T 6-6
1981 vs #4 Alabama L 24-7
1986 vs #7 Texas A&M W 35-17
1992 vs #7 Texas A&M L 31-22
1993 @ #5 Texas A&M L 24-0
1995 @ #3 Texas A&M L 33-17
2011 N #3 Oregon W 40-27
2018 N #8 Miami W 33-17
2023 N #8 Florida State L 45-24
3-6-1 vs 10 in opening games. I am not certain where the rankings will fall come opening week.

1983 had to be one of our toughest opening months ever.
Week 1: 5-point loss to then ranked No. 12 FSU at home
Week 2: 12 point win over Rice in Houston
Week 3: Blowout win over then ranked No. 9 Washington (I was there) - for the longest time this was the highest attendance in LSU history, I believe it was the first game to break 80,000
Week 4: 14-point loss to then ranked No. 12 Florida (this was Oct. 1)
Four games, three ranked opponents and a road game to Rice (they were terrible).

Pretty sure he meant hardest opener.
He should have meant hardest opener, but if he did then why did he mention 90’s Florida games that were played in October, 2010’s Bama games that were played in November, and 2006 Auburn that was the 2nd or 3rd game played that year?

Yes, and it’s good that we play openers like this, because our SEC schedule isn’t tough enough to give us the resume to make the playoffs.

I say yes, @Clemson a top 5 or 10 team in their house at night. Very difficult especially with an unproven OL and a defense with questions, but I think the depth is there on defense. The OL will be an issue.

2011 Oregon and 2007 Va Tech were much tougher games outside of not being true road games.
That Va Tech team finished the season #3 and was a monster.

In the Oregon game, there was no playoff either at the time, so a loss for either team was going to be devastating.
This Clemson game is going to be tough, and a loss will hurt, but you have some leeway and another mulligan to give at least.
