My dad had basketball tickets from day 1 in 1972 in the PMAC; the whole family went to games. I believe the band was there from the beginning, so yes, it's a tradition.

I work with young people and take offense to blanket statements about kids just being dumb. A kid hasn't had as much education as an adult--that doesn't make them dumb in the sense you mean.

quote:

this is why you don’t see older people in school anymore.

I'm currently in school--wanted a career change.

This was your original statement I was responding to:

quote:

They are stupid. That’s why they go to school. To learn.

I don't think I failed to comprehend anything.

Growing up is realizing that the marketing team controls what the band plays. They have no control over it. If you want to hear good songs, maybe don't turn every song into a vulger chant, and they'll keep playing.

Not really....what I was going for was calling you dumb for being approximately 20 years old and not knowing how to do research.

They were there in the mid-80s when I was a student :) I remember the Front Row Lunatics and throwing newspaper up in the air after UK introductions :)

So, country music? Are we talking Waylon, Tim McGraw, or Florida Georgia Line?

only been a tradition since the early Brown era Before that there was a jazz band make up of teachers and professors that played. Mostly jazz and swing stuff. I think they were called the Court Jesters.
The Court Molesters (As GBFTL members used to call them) were really bad.

When Frank Wickes was hired in 1980, one of the first things he did (At our urging) was to disband the CJ'ers and implement the new Basketball Band.

It was basically the same as what you see now. (A group of Tiger Band members who could play well and liked Basketball)

We didn't have an official name. The group was just called the LSU Basketball Band and/or the GBFTL/Tiger Band Basketball Band.

BTW, all you "Anti-Band Pro PIM" cretins can go kick rocks. PIM is insulting to all the college musicians that practice and devote their time to playing in the Football Marching Band or the Basketball Band..........

Bengal Brass has gone downhill ever since they started allowing woodwinds in the band

This I can agree with BUT inclusion is the way of society these days.

ETA

If they would have kept the same number of brass pieces and added woodwinds I'd have been OK with that, but to replace some brass spots with woodwinds was not optimal to say the least.

I was a member of the Bengal Brass back in the mid 80’s. It was a great gig. Our reward was traveling to the SEC tournament and NCAA tournaments which we mad a run every season back then.

I went to Atlanta, Cincinnati, Chicago, NYC, Tucson (side trip to Mexico) during my run in the band. We had a great time. We were also paid a whopping $10 per game back then.

Didn't they already try a DJ for either men's or women's basketball a few years ago?

I think it was at LSU that I'm think of. I only remember bc when the PA announced him, it sounded like he said DJ C-dix. I never found out the DJs actual name, but I'm hoping that wasn't it.

I'm guessing it was c mix.

I think that the Court Jesters started before Brown - back during the Pete Maravich era actually. I don't think that many of their members were students, which is kind of odd considering that LSU does have a number of music majors.

Around 1980, the GBFTL started sharing some of its members, and the group was eventually rechristened as the "Bengal Brass Basketball Band."

Later started playing at women's basketball games and then shortened the name to the "Bengal Brass Band" when they added volleyball games as well.

Seems like they shortened the name again these days to the "Bengal Band," now that it also has non-brass/woodwind members in it too.

Nope. Our student workers would paint tiger paws from the LSU dressing room to the floor, and paint the band area at the end of the court. This was in the Ag Center. People would line up for the freashman game when Pete was a frosh, and then leave after that game.Remember there was no heat and no air conditioning there, and the team could not practice there because the floor couldnt be put down til after the rodeo. Many stories about that wonderful old place.

YES numbuts it’s been there forever. And no, the PMAC does not need to go to a DJ instead. What a maroon!!!
