A couple of years ago when LSU played OU in super and pitched their ace (Gray?), Skip Sam s he was beat he’d seen since Ben.

Aaron also pitched in an era that had bats and balls toned down contrary to when Ben pitched.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. Bats started getting juiced up (players too) in the mid 90s

Mike Sirotka has to be in this discussion guys

The guy knew how to pitch. I doubt he ever topped 91, but damn he was a warrior

Never got to see Ben, but having season tickets when Nola was there was awesome. Going to a game on Friday night you knew the Tigers we’re taking home a win. That is a rare and beautiful thing in a game like baseball.

Ben had a big, flat fastball and thats it.
I umped him in High school and you are full of shite. He had a break your back curve and then at LSU had a change.

No love for Lloyd Peever?! Yeah, he was only here for one season, but he was phenomenal. I've never seen a collegiate pitcher that could paint the black like he could.

I posted this in another thread, but based on one season so not quite a career. That ‘92 season was a MONSTER. And these idiots that say the bats were the same then as B.B. Core is today are COMPLETELY FULL OF shite. The exit velocity hurt players in high school and in college.

Paul Byrd had a better career than Ben McDonald. Aaron will likely end up the best though.

Ben had better “stuff”

While I love Ben, he can only dream about having the movement that Nola puts on every single pitch he throws. Nola’s “stuff” is the reason he’s as good as he is in the MLB.

These are 3 different pitches, all starting off in the inner/outer half of the plate and all finishing out of the zone. A mid 90’s fastball with that much tail is just unfair. This is just filth and some of the best “stuff” in the league right now.

Do you think that pitching has wveved in the last 30 years? Was there a circle change then? How often were people throwing a true cutter before Mo Rivera?
I wonder if Ben had a true pitching coach growing up ie before college? I wonder if playing basketball at LSU interrupted fall ball? Was there even fall ball then?
There are a lot of questions that people can get educated on IF this shitty comparison of past and present athletes keep coming up.
You can’t really do this without looking at everything including health, fitness, technology, and changing times. There was very little to ZERO travel ball when Ben played.

Ok-
1989 Ben McDonald and 2013 Aaron Nola come out in the 2018 Draft.

Who goes higher?

Ben faced slightly harder bats, but they were not the juiced bats of the 90s,

The bats they used when McDonald was here were not just “slightly” harder They were aluminum bats. The juiced/ nuclear bats were the -5s and I’m pretty sure they only used those for 2-3 seasons in the late 90s. The other aluminum bats were -3 iirc

If I need to win a game, give me 2013 Nola over any LSU pitcher ever.
it still chaps my behind that we went 0-2 that year. I don’t think I will ever get over that

I never seen a freshman with control like Nola had, I knew he was gonna be special. He walked like 7 dudes his freshman year. He actually had to learn to throw balls because he was just relentless pounding the strike zone as a freshman and would give up too many hits.

Nola is the GOAT IMO.

I think the -3s came around sometime around 2001 or 2002. I used them in Jr high and highschool

Your real power guys still crushed 20 plus home runs a year so it had no huge effect on them

LSU hit 188 HR in 1 year. B Larson had 40 and was 2nd in the NCAA to Lance Berkman
