Oh my god him in an Oriels uniform isn’t him at LSU???
No shite dumbass. Point is he was drafted because he had 100 in his arm jackass.

Paul Byrd has 109 wins in the bigs. 30 or so more than Ben, 70 or so more than Nola. 100 plus wins in MLB is pretty significant interns of a career.

Ben was fast tracked to the majors. I think he spent like 2 weeks in minors before being called up. Started out on fire as rookie.
Injury slowed down his mlb career.
I love Nola too. He is on track for a great mlb career.

Nola career
Freshman year
7-4---3.61 ERA----1.06 WHIP----7 walks-----89 strikeouts---89.2 innings
Sophomore year
12-1----1.57 ERA----0.80 WHIP-----122Ks-----18walks----126 innings
Junior Year
11-1-----1.47 ERA----0.83 WHIP-------134ks------27 walks-----116 innings
Career total
30-6-----2.09 ERA-----0.88WHIP-----345 Ks------52walks-----331 innings---9.35ks/9-----1.41walks/9
Big Ben
Freshman year
2-3---4.06 ERA------1.25 WHIP-----27Ks-----4 walks----37.2 innings----
Sophomore year
13-7-----2.65 ERA-----1.04 WHIP-----144ks-----27walks----118.2 innings
Junior year
14-4----3.49 ERA-----1.08 WHIP----202Ks------40walks-----152 innings
Career total
29-14------3.24ERA------1.08 WHIP------373ks-------71walks-------307 innings-------10.88ks/9------2.07walks/9
Ben faced slightly harder bats, but they were not the juiced bats of the 90s, but that can also be offset with the fact Nola faced harder competition as more elite players were playing college ball
What stands out is Bens strikeouts are insane, but Nola with back to back seasons of a sub 0.85 WHIP is just impossible
Not going to lie, when I put the numbers in front of me I am taking Nola

No love for Lloyd Peever?! Yeah, he was only here for one season, but he was phenomenal. I've never seen a collegiate pitcher that could paint the black like he could.

He went 14-0 with an earned run average of 1.92. He also started the season with 39 straight innings without a walk.

Peever's performance in 1992 prompted then LSU coach Skip Bertman to tell Collegiate Baseball Magazine "I've never had a pitcher with better control."

quote:That is certainly not why Gausman was drafted so high. 1) because he never hit triple digits before he was drafted. No one is making a top ten draft pick today on the potential to throw that hard. And 2) The Orioles thought he was the closest to pro ready with his mid 90s fastball
Point is he was drafted because he had 100 in his arm jackass.

MLB wouldn’t draft on potential to throw 100. Especially a guy that hit 97-98 on the gun at LSU several times.
MLB never drafts on potential

Obviously. I was gonna chime in with that but you covered it.

Your right. Velocity isn’t a barometer on pitching ability at all. Solid call.
Better stuff isn’t just velocity though. Nola has more command, more movement, and throws a bigger variety of pitches. Thus, Ben didn’t have better stuff, he just threw harder

The bats from the ‘80’s were significantly different than those new B.B. Core.
As far as command, I umped a game McDonald pitched when he was at Denham, he had a great breaking ball and could command his fast ball..
He threw harder than anyone I ever umped. Greg Patterson had a nice fast ball guessing in low to maybe mid 90’s. He was a good pitcher. Umped him in legion ball.
Nola also benefited from a lot more coaching and travel ball and so forth than McDonald and others so you have to factor that in. He did t play basketball for LSU...

Aaron was an automatic win and I believe better in post-season.

quote:maybe, but Ben had the greatest single day in LSU history in that TAMU 89 Regional. that was a great Aggie team. He ruined Mark Johnson’s career because many ex Aggie players that I’ve talked to have said that Johnson was never the same coach after that. . Bertman also worked his pitchers a lot longer
I believe better in post-season.

it's okay Solo. It's like talking to a wall with ell.

I’ll defer to skip Bertman.
It’s Ben.
It’s Ben.

I'll take Nola. But I'm biased. I got to see his stuff up close and personal from behind the dish.
