If you were a football player, why would you not get Covid now on purpose?

Even the government acknowledges that virtually everyone will get it eventually. These elite athletes are at nearly zero health risk.
I would go ahead and get a positive test on the books, get my quarantine and get it over with.
If you’ve got millions at stake in the NFL, why risk getting it in the fall?

Because I don’t know anyone who has or ever had covid.

I used to be in that boat. Now know of lots of LSU students who’ve recently tested positive, none with serious symptoms though.

No proof of immunity

You can get it multiple times. It’s not chicken pox

That’s a spurious claim not supported by fact.

It turns out, despite the positive test, they found that none of them were secreting live, infectious virus. It was a quirk of the rapid tests, which sample for low levels of genetic material, not whole virus. They concluded that the recovered patients had residual genetic fragments that still triggered the tests to turn positive. Those individuals were no longer contagious.

The OP has a very legitimate point!

At the same time once the body has it, it has already begun building up an immunity to help it from getting a second time. Also we will have a vaccine eventually. It’s possible within the year

If we are taking that approach, why even quarantine

Please post a link disputing it.

We won't/can't know for awhile what the actual immunity picture looks like.
It is certainly encouraging that there is evidence that there have been no double infections yet, but let's pump the brakes for another 6-9 months.

I certainly did. Could that change in the future? Sure, as all things can.
But as of now, there is no evidence of double infections that I have seen. (And I’ve looked)
Any links to the contrary would be appreciated.

I haven’t seen legitimate evidence people are being infected more than once at this point. I would think this would be huge national news if this was the case
Posted on 6/20/20 at 8:46 pm to saderade
That’s because there is none.
If there were, the pursuit of a vaccine would be futile.

Not only would it be huge national news, the media would be throwing a party over that news.

because you take it home and kill your grandmother.

Don't be irresponsible. We knew months ago to not visit the elderly or immune compromised.

All I did was answer the questions "why not get it on purpose?". My answer is the same and it's the right one: one might not want to because they don't even know if that is going to bestow durable immunity on them.
I didn't say they shouldn't go ahead and get it (I have to imagine young athletes are one of the safest cohorts in the world for this thing.) I merely answered the question.
