If you agree that Coach O was not the right hire at the time...

Who do you think LSU should have hired instead, after Herman and Fisher said no? As I recall the next tier candidates were:
-Mullen
-Gundy
-Fedora
-Fleck
I am far from a Coach O or Alleva apologist but what might have worked better?
With the benefit of hindsight I'm thinking maybe Mullen, if he could keep Aranda, might have been better. It will be interesting to see what Mullen can do at Florida but it's far from certain that he could have kept Aranda at LSU and if that's the case is Mullen with no Aranda better than O with Aranda?
Time will tell if it was the right decision but with what we know now what would have been a better decision than hiring Coach O last fall?

I don't think Aleva had an accual list past Herman and Jimbo but anyone would have been better. We needed a culture change.

If it were my choice I would have gone with Fleck. At least we would have an identity.

Gundy is the best of that list but not sure he would have wanted to follow Miles again. I think he's happy where he is.
Mullen would have been a slam dunk hire. He's going to make Kirby's job much, much harder over the next 5 years.
Fedora has always been middle of the road.
Fleck would not have fit in well here. He would need an elite staff of southern recruiters and I think his rah rah "Row the Boat" schtick would get real old if he wasn't winning big here. LSU fans will eat their own in a heartbeat and I'm not sure his personality bodes well in that type of environment.

Mullen was my fallback guy after Herman and fisher. He is clearly better than Orgeron. I know some wanted frost and pushed hard. LSU gambled on a guy with very little upside and tons of risk. Just a terrible decision all around.

He'll Mullen had a pretty great defense the last 2 years without Aranda.

Is this where I list the coach I wanted and then you list his record this year and how Orgeron was just as good or better than that guy, therefore that clearly makes O the superior coach?

There is, quite literally, a list of about 30 names that should have come up before O. And 30 is being generous.

Jimbo never wanted the job and was using LSU to leverage FSU, he changed this year because his dwindling relationships at FSU.
Herman wanted TX...end of story.
LSU was being played just like Miles played LSU a few years back.

Mullen knew he wasn't getting anywhere near Atlanta with State.

And with what we saw this year I'd now agree Kiffin and Frost would have been good hires. But this time last year Kiffin was in essence being jettisoned from Alabama and Scott Frost had UCF finishing 3rd in the AAC East with a losing record after losing the Cure Bowl. Maybe now we'd look at either of those hires as genius hires by Alleva, but back when O was hired he'd have been run out of town.
I guess what I'm asking is if O wasn't the right answer (and it's looking like he wasn't) only knowing what was known then who was?
