Who knows? But if he hadnt went to Alabama, LSu would have at least 1 more and probably 2-3 more.

This is one of the lesser known things, Emmert is the one that made the Saban we see today. This certainly doesn't mean anyone could do it, Emmert knew the key to putting his plan in full motions is to get a great coach which is why he went all out to get Saban.

The players that were the catalyst behind winning the Championship were Saban's players. Just go look at the production on offense and defense in 2003 its an overwhelming %.

Go back and reread his post.

why?

He didn't leave for another college - he left for the NFL, which other coaches have done.

Hell, Steve Spurrier left Florida for the NFL, and then came back to coach a division opponent (just like Saban).
But UF fans universally LOVE Spurrier.

Personally, I like Saban and am grateful he got us to the top and started a (generally) successful 20-year run. It's not Saban's fault that the best college job available when he came back to college was at Bama. I suspect if the LSU job was open, he'd have come back here.

Hating Saban is childish.

Had Nick Saban not come to LSU where would this program be? Without Saban I think we’d be some kinda mixture of Tennessee and AtM.

Thanks for getting us on the track, Nick! Now go frick yourself.

It been almost 20 years since he left. Get over your hatred for the man that wanted to see if he can coach at the next level.

Better question is if Saban didn’t come here how many natties would he have won. LSU obviously gave him the platform he needed to prove himself

That is not how that went down... few know that Saban and Sexton went in to negotiate a salary bump up so he could stay till Kristen finished at the SJA... but Bertman rejected that... Skip did that to us folks.

So you are saying that Emmert, Dinardo, Bertman, the Board and the boosters are to credit for spending money but not Saban? If your theory was true we'd all be licking Texas A&M's boots.

I did read the post. He said Saban was in the right place at the right time but Saban did not cause it. And I disagree.

The more painful question is asking how many would we've won if he didn't have the NFL itch

If he had never gone to the NFL, he doesn't win as many titles as he did at Alabama...nor would he have been as successful at LSU during this time. By going to the NFL, he got a new appreciation for what the college game was about and it cured his "grass is always greener itch". He has said this about his career numerous times, and I don't believe he was blowing smoke when he acknowledged it.

I think Saban is one of those rare coaches that could've won eventually at a number of places. It's just a matter of what programs would've benefited. Saban was only going somewhere that has the resources to win. I'm betting his eye was always on a program performing well below its capabilities that just needed the right direction to become elite.

He only came to LSU with promises that the program would upgrade its football facilities and AD budget. What Saban did for LSU is remind our administration that they have all of the basic tools in place to win, they just had to commit to it.

Without Saban I think LSU would've still become elite eventually but maybe it would've taken a lot longer than it did. I don't think it's one or the other, both Saban and LSU would've prospered without each other eventually.

The only way we would have become elite is to have hired a coach very similar to him in regards to the leap he made in recruiting. We had some damn good teams in the '80s with a lot of talent but Curley, Arnspargar and Archer just could not compete in that part of the job. Dinardo got our foot in the door somewhat, but without Saban or someone very similar, we were headed for a loooong stretch of 7-8 win seasons.

He didn’t. Emmert did absolutely cause it. Were you born or aware of “Bring Back the Magic”?
Faulk, Faneca and Tyler set all of that in motion.

I'll go on record with saying zero.

LSU wasn't in the natty business, that was Bama's department. We were all about going 8-3, 9-2, and competing with (not beating) national powers in bowl games.

The Orange and 2 Sugars in the 80's against Nebraska were great, because we stepped on the same field as the Cornhuskers. Nobody was truly upset when we lost, because nobody really expected we could beat them. But, by God, we gave them a game...

I think Saban's true legacy is the SEC's rise to dominance. Tuberville wasn't ready to concede the West to Saban, so he kept fighting and improving at Auburn. Richt wasn't giving up on the SEC without a fight, he kept UGA up there. Then Urban came and shifted the power to Florida, but by then LSU had become a machine under Saban and later Les, and we pushed back. Tennessee wasn't ready to give up either, and Arkansas was trying to hang onto relevance... the SEC became a warzone in the first decade of the century. Whoever emerged from the fray was the most battle-hardened team in the nation.

I honestly don't think that happens, if Saban doesn't elevate LSU. We'd all keep playing to win the SEC with a 10-2 record.
